you could wear any harness you want, even a windsurfing one.

I think you could handle a reefed down 600 in more than you could handle a 700 in once you learn to tack it as you can reduce the sail area from aprox 12.4sqm to 10.2sqm which makes it far more manageable, but i havent been out when it has been windy enough to warant reefing it down.

I will have the boat at the club on thursday if all goes to plan, you can have a go after racing if you wish

GRF, I don't understand. You're virtually a watersports god and yet you're worried about a boom being a little bit low?

You don't have to sail a Contender with loads of mast rake on, it's just that they work better that way. You could learn with an upright mast then rake it back as you improve. By the way I'm 6'1" and 16st and don't find it a problem.

I've never understood the boom height issue. I'm 6'4 and 14.5st. I get under it no problem. I do let the kicker off but only to help get it thru the tack, but thats as I normally only do well in a blow due to all the extra weight I'm carrying. Just look at weights of current champions 11st no problem.

The newer sails are cut shorter than class rules to keep boom up a bit. As for look of rig Mine's full carbon with a upto date North sail. Beautifull wood bonezzi. Got to be the most beautiful boat in the world.

As to speed I can beat 800's vortexes 700's etc to the windward mark as the boat tacks that quick if theres a shift I'm off where everyone else just stands on as they get stuck hove to. Or if I do capsize I'm back up again before they catch me. Last two races I finished a few minutes ahead of Assy vortex's and thats on the water never mind handicap. Where as when other classes capsize you just cruise past.

Down wind not always boring except in low winds but who wants to sail in that. Boat was designed for aussie surf so flys at sea (SAFELY). Great to get to windward mark and not to have to worry about putting kite up. Another good thing boat left fully rigged ready to go I can get to the club and be on the water in 10 mins. never mind faffing about trying to get kite put in properly. Just get out and enjoy yourself

Fleets brilliant with good open/worlds circuit. And the boat can still be raced well if your older as its not just about whos fittest its all about tacktics and boat handling. If your good its also not about the boat. At last years halifax open were all there in nice shiny new boats but got whooped by tim holden in an old rondar.

Get yourself to an open and have a look. No doubt the lads will be kipping at someones house and off out for a curry.

Well I'm going to have a look at 558, its a Rondar boat so what does that
make it? Old?

It'll be the fourth in our club so it'll be even steven competition which will
probably put me back where I've always been, doing well when its light and
struggling when its breezey.

It wont be new. Big difference between that and a wavelength/bonezzi is cockpit sides vertical and I remember right it has sides down the centreboard slot that make it smaller under the boom. Not bad to start on but if serious you get best plastic hull shape with wavelength. Then for rig you can't knock a wavelenth. Alloy mast good you wont notice difference with carbon till you capsize then much lighter and quicker to right. Whatever the mast superspar carbon booms never snap and dont hurt when you do decide to get it wrong and headbut it. Sailwise darcon most flexible and you can trapoline it for fun and easy to depower. I love see thru look of North kevlar and shape fantastic. North reps spending time getting it right.

Happy sailing. See you in denmark????

grumpf, 558 is quite old, but I started a couple of years ago in 473 and didn't have too many issues with it.  A carbon rig does make a big difference.  if you can't get the whole thing get a carbon boom, as said above it doesn't hurt if it hits you and it slides off more easily if you forget the kicker on a tack!

473 was a rondar and it had plenty of room around the centreboard slot.  If you aren't sure about it, look on the BCA site for other options.  As 652 says, plenty of guys are lighter in weight and still do well.  Technique and tactics count for much more!

There's an open at Eastbourne this weekend - go down and have a look for yoursel and have a chat to some of the guys.
