And of course there is no choice about using fully battened sails - they are so superior in performance that as soon as you legalise them they are compulsory.

The Tasar is pretty popular in Aus and when we had the 2001(?) worlds at our club there were 100 boats. Just because the UK didn't take to them dosn't mean they are not popular.

I don't think the UK was ready for the tasar at the time ... I think they are very nice boats ...

I spoke with the designer and that's not quite how he put it ... anyway it was the only DB boat for sale so it was that or nothing ...

I've been actually leaning towards the paradox. Though I've had some
people recently make good pitches for the merlin class. The 12 still seems
like the boat for me though at the moment. Just need to get the money
together. The fact that there is no second hand market of good boats i think
is a serious issue for me at the moment.

And the reason for that? The class is navel gazing again. And less people are happy to build new boats when they are doing that.

As for other comments on this thread.
If they change the sail measurement rules ( more battens and the like ). It would mean it doesn't leave a load of unmeasured sail area in the main as currently the case. If you do that all the boats in the fleet have the mast in the wrong place.

Big conundrum.

If you started from a fresh. With accurate sail measurement meaning the ratio between main and jib was better. And put this on a boat like Jo Richards. IMHO you would have an extremely popular class again. With or without fully battens or rotating masts.

Basically the sail measurement rules should have been changed at the same time as the Double Bottom rule was voted in.

Sorry for my naivity, what is navel gazing?

The New Jo Richards design does indeed look fantastic!

As for the sails, I'm not too fussed about those.  I'll design and make my sails to whatever set of rules I'm given.

Quite ... not easy to see a route out ... at present there is a hard core of active sailors but things just don't seem to be moving forwards.

I fear if they don't do somthing they will continue to base line; which seems to be the desire of the members.

If they want to get back to the big fleet hey days then some bold action is needed. This action would of course also carry risk ...

As you say ....big conundrum

........ I see!

I agree that the class need to take action, but I don't think the action is necessarily to change the boat.
Advertising and possibly the top guys all part exchanging with builders
for new boats so a second hand market develops and then more
advertising with a really great display at the dinghy show?
Good showings of numbers on MASS at ALL of the big handicap / pursuit
race events. Lots of going around being social and chatting to people
from other classes at these big events?
