... what a bizarre looking boat, I'd just go straight to the IC if i really wanted one!

Sliding seats complicate things... get a trapeze

The ToY was not designed as a feeder to the IC, it was designed by Tony Allen (of Holt Allen fame). The ToY was sucessful in it's time and held the record for the fastest channel crossing for a number of years

There's nothing complicated about a sliding seat, it's just a different approach and does mean you can get your weight out further than a trapeze if your sailing an IC. If you've not tried it you should, it's just a different way of sailing. It only gets complicated when you have a fore and aft carridge, but only the IC has one of these as the ToY, MiniSprint and (early) Hornet have fixed rails.

As for it being a horrible looking boat that's down to personal choice, it was a child of the 1960s, I'd imagine the RS range will look dated in 40 years time.

And yes....that's me in the pic of the ToY on the previous page.

If I can work out how to make the pictures smaller, I'll post a pic of the ToY I owned a couple of years ago. As Neil says, the ToY was a very different beast to the IC, and in some ways more difficult to sail, as it lacked the balance of the IC. Another boat the Laser killed, as you could get almost the same performance in a much easier package to sail.

I alway thought the sliding seat looks great. How come there is only one active class which uses them? Are they very difficult to use? Or just not as effective as a trapeze?

A sliding seat is all about technique and practice. It does take a while to get smooth tacking and gybing, but as with anything practice makes perfect.

As for effectiveness.......

You can't move you weight fore and aft, which is a limitation. Other than
that, lots of fun!

There is (or was) a sailing dinghy museum in (I think) Scotland, which had an
early wooden Minisail. Does anyone know about this place?

I sailed a minisail in the 70's -
BOOGLARIZER 2942 ( one of the many beefheartian names of my boats )
With a sliding seat, but adjustable fore and aft before sailing. It was about the same speed as a moth at the time. ( moths have got a bit faster since )
The boat was GRP and a bit floppy. - but stiffer than a topper.

Is it not possible to have a sliding seat which can also slide back and forth whilst sailing or would it be too complicated?
