I see your point, but as far as I can find out (talking to Rohan etc) the Moth when foiling is about the same upwind VMG as a Formula board but slower downwind. However, in both foilers and FW the performance varies enormously depending on sailor skill so perhaps we'll never know who's faster until guys of equal calibre take each other on. The guy Rohan used to race against regards himself as very average and would be a huge distance behind a top-class FW sailor, according to his own description. On the other hand, the FW board could almost be eaten alive by Optimists when it gets light and shifty, whereas the Moth is still an okay performer in such conditions. |

Out of interest, how many Mothies have sailed boards and vice versa? Unless you could sail each at a similar level, how could anyone know which is more fun? Is foiling more fun than forward loops? More fun than geckos and goitres or head dips on the rail? More fun than going many knots faster than a Moth has gone, for more speed? I genuinely don't know the answer - but I wonder if anyone really does? AMAC may, but he's so closely involved he's not a dispassionate judge. One former multi world champ in Moths (pre foils) sails FW boards now and really enjoys it. FW boards are certainly not my cup of tea, but he has no plans to get into foilers. So maybe foiling isn't "more fun", it's just more fun to some people (and the best of wishes to them). Edited by CT249 |
