Topic: Question? Posted: 07 Mar 07 at 4:48pm |
Laser47,
You wrote that me being 5ft and 5 1/2 stone sounds pretty unrealistic, i can unfotunatly tell you that it is i cna't seem to put on weight. I got boared of the topper and a 9er needs deeper water that in the waters where i sail when i'm at home so a laser it is. In a light wind I can manage a full rig, its just when it starts to blow i find it difficult.
I know what you mean about injuries though, I have dislicated my hips, bent my knees the wrong way round, Only on Saturday did I get concusion when somebody else capsized on top of me. I fell in and got stuck to my daggerboard so it could have been leathal. Fun though.

how deep is the water were you sail, a 9er doesnt need much more than a laser unless its an issue with the area you have to sail on.
ps, i have to get up at 6.45 for school each morning.

All of that and you're just 15! I wonder what state you're going to be in when you're older .
.... and some say sailing isn't a sport...
Maybe trapezing would save your knees. I still think there's a market for a single-hander with trapeze for lightweights.

Helz,
Don't be too put off by the ideal weight. I started sailing a Finn when I was 16 and only 10 stone. It was a steep learning curve and fantastic fun. I'm still sailing one now over 30 years later and I'm still not heavy enough!

All for taking on a challenge but 5.5 st for a Fin may be a little too hard.
BTW I used to work at RHS as a sailing instructor is Mr Bouton still there?

At 5.5 stone I make that 35 kg, it occurs to me that you're lighter than a Laser hull without the rig. Lighter than a Topper hull too.
In your hectic school day, do you get a chance to take any snacks with you, to eat straight after sailing?

I don't think Peter V was suggesting you sail a Finn, more that it is possible to successfully sail classes that you are theoretically the wrong weight for, so don't get too hung up on needing to be the "ideal" weight.

There is always the opption of storning the leach of a contender to reduce the sail area, there are a least two of the light weights who have flatter sails cut. I know it has been discussed in the class weither a smaller sail should be supported with cups at the nationals etc.
Alternativly when I started sailing the contender I was 9.5-10 st and about 21 now nearly 24 I'm pushing 13st, part of that was that for the first year I was eating two meals at a sitting the other part is that Im now at Uni and it is acceptable to drink so much more.
So Hels start sailing a contender, eat more, go to university and in a few year you can becaume a 24 year old man with a beae-belly and a beard .
Seriously dont worry too much about ideal weight sailing skill will be much more important than weight upto a point, at the same time you do sound a little small for any Laser rig, why not look at the Topper or the Byte, the older rig was not much differnt to a 4.7, or if you want to be cool a Europe.
