Perhaps it did Rupert but not to the extent it is often reported. Myself and some of my children have had a very jolly Friday night at Southport 24, but just once a year. I have experienced one competitor at a Nationals who drank an astonishing amount and raced the following day with no significant after effect, but another friend throwing up over the transom before race one did not seem that attractive.
Believe me, I am not a miserable old sod, just realistic.

Well let's just say this, other than the One day round island events locally I've only ever entered three dinghy events, two 'nationals' the first an Iso event years ago where some arrogant knob end in a dinghy insisted we wear buoyancy on a sea flat calm roasting hot day instead of it being hoisted in the rigging close at hand, the RS100 debacle and the Forum Open meeting at which you couldn't find a nicer bunch of folk, so yes attitudes do reflect. (I was even nice to that nasty shouty Phantom man who God punished later by freezing him to his tent.)
So how are the RS100 Nationals numbers, increasing are they? And this is no reflection on RS staff, I've always found them to be helpful cheery and good craic, so maybe it's just their surly customer base.. (And before you start, note how many new RS Boats I've had) ![]() Edited by iGRF - 15 Jul 14 at 9:50am |

If one lives ones life looking for and analyzing other peoples faults it will leave little time for enjoying their good qualities. I like people, they are always interesting. Some people where dropped on their head as children and have peculiar personalities but most people pass through life searching for happiness. They do not have it in for you Young Fuller.

Well that explains for your expertise, such a rock solid foundation of experience on what dinghy events are really like, three (in how many years, 10?) being a perfectly valid statistical sample as any fule kno

For a man of such limited experience you have some strong opinions ... I'd suggest you try some more events; not all championships are like that RS100 event you describe. Championships weeks(ends) are some of the most fun and sociable holidays I have ever had ... |

Well, I'm done with them already so we'll have to beg to differ, I prefer sailing at my home club(s) I might have a look at one of the big handicaps one day, I've always fancied taking the nosebleed trip up North to see Lester & other ex windsurfing pals at the Lord Birkett and maybe if there were something similar down here I might have a look, but it'll need to be bread knife friendly (Which Poole most definitely wasn't). I spent years away at Nationals of one description or another and this part of our lives together is supposed to be a bit more considerate. The FOM taking place on her birthday really racked up the brownie points - Not.

Graeme, you need to select your events wisely. I find i get so much more out of travelling to events now i dont travel every oither weekend. The Lord Birkett is a prime example. Worth every minute of the 7 hour drive for me this year. The result is secondary to the warm glow i get being part of what is a celebration of sailing. It really is lightyears ahead of events like the Bloody Mary etc. Plus its one of the few 'Proper Parties' left in dinghy sailing (IMNHO)

Well wednesday afternoon I had a great battle with the Tasar, down at the lake, the girls who normally sail a Snipe were racing it and we chopped and changed places screwing each other up whilst my normal Laser nemesis headed off to the horizon, but what a fun race it was. She is a very good racing windsurfer who also has a fair talent at the helm of a dinghy, She had me wrong siding marks, I was sailing her way past the bear off point and all manner of normal team sailing nonsense it was fun, then I had a good look at it.
She'd been running the jib by the lee, which kind of works for her in the Snipe but didn't seem to be working so well and she pointed out the 'spanner' she'd had some problems with. WTF? said I 'does that do?', well you put it here and here she said which seemed to be exactly opposite to what I'd do with it. It's some sort of boom locking device, the mast is a nice aero shape which twists, but it appears you have to lock and unlock then reset this spanner thing every tack, I meant to take a picture and get the whole sp from someone on here, to help her for next time. (I do actually give her tactical hints and tips as we're going round) So if someone could elaborate we'd both be very appreciative, it's quite complicated and clunky but I'm sure things would work better for her if it was just locked off and left so she can keep her head out of the boat to watch out for dodgy old gits snaking her at marks..
