The original Cuben fibre was made from random scatter plan spectra fibres laminated, it didn't last at all nor did it like being stitched through. This new stuff appears to have a waft & weave pattern, very fine filament can remember what weight we used, not the lightest the next one up. I'm 18 months in, 4 races a night Tuesdays from when the clocks go forward til lights out. a bit of shrinkage if anything, (the battens appear stretched in their pockets when not rigged and I've used it overpowered a bit of late (and been caned for my efforts), bloody expensive, it cost £1200 although I'd guess a Finn sail would be cheaper.. The original plan was to route a line down the mast to adjust the head tensioner (it really is only a light(ish) air thing and it supports pumping action giving good return to centre. But the sail was so fast without doing anything it didn't matter, what did become problematic was it was too powerful over 12 kts, making it difficult for me to handle. Edited by G.R.F. |

This isn't new. I was building Cuben Fiber sails last century and even back then it had a warp and a fill, like normal cloth. In fact, it looked just like in the pics of the windsurfer sail. I never saw any with a "random scatter plan". It was hellishly expensive, shrunk a lot and like any laminate, you wouldn't want to be stitching it. It was also very light, strong and fast. |

Eheheh, quite not... The kicker broke during the test. Luca Devoti opted for a fixed kicker strap in the final stage of production of the D-One. Actually, the controls on the boat are the halyards for main and gennaker(also for extending/retracting the pole), sheets for main and gennaker and main traveller, main outhaul and cunningham on both wings. Most sailors which tested the D-One suggested going to a traditional adjustable kicker strap and moving the outhaul on the boom: Luca listened and tried a new kicker system based on the Finn one but made in carbon fiber. He actually ran into a factory near the lakeside to laminate a prototype in few hours! |

Quote from a posting from Martin Wadhams, MD of RS Racing on another forum (the D1) ‘is a higher tech, higher production cost boat that will probably appeal to a different group of sailors’ I couldn’t have put it better myself! The two boats are quite different and the RS will suit some sailors and the D-One will suit others. It’s up to the sailor to determine which boat best suits his or her preferences and I am sure, now that the Yachting magazines are getting a chance to test sail these boats, much more input will be available against which to make the right personal decision. I am sure that RS will make a success of the RS100 in the same way that I have every confidence that the D-One will continue to succeed both in the |

I like it.
![]() It has a certain style I think that is rather more up-market than the general run of the mill stuff that is generally seen about the place. Well done Messrs Devoti and Wadhams for your efforts. I'll have one of each. |
