Mkind you, I still remember when I was sailing my mini-tonner in an offshore race in light winds and we suddenly felt the boat slow down. Meanwhile, the guys in the big (44ft or so) game fishing boat that had just crossed our bows got very excited about the huge fish they had just caught........

The guy in the chair seemed a bit deflated when the line lifted out of the water between our two boats and he realised that he'd caught something he couldn't hang off a gantry and get photographed with.  Then the line snapped, which meant at least he could claim that "the one that got away" was a 20 footer.

The big game fishos can be odd; one has to worry about a bunch of people who need 40+ foot of boat, two turbocharged diesels, $90k worth of fishing gear and $100k of electronics to give a fish a "fair fight".

I actually think jet skiers are a great spectator sport and I often pop down to the Ferryboat Inn at the other end of Hayling Island where they gather in shoals.  The best entertainment comes when they beginners keep coming off the back under acceleration  Big smile

I know some clubs own their own premises and land and so are protected from those sort of commercial rent/lease problems......is this a rare thing? Quite common? I have no idea.

I know Whitefriars own the freehold. I think Bowmoor own the freehold, but not 100%.Don't know any others. Fairly certain even if you own the freehold you don't own the water in the lake.

Only been to Upton Warren once , it was enough . I’ve never been to any place I would rather sail less . 



We popped in midweek last year for a look after meeting up with family for lunch at adjacent garden centre last year.

It does now seem to have the appearance of a water theme park these days, which might be off putting to some. However, it was wall to wall happy kids, but sadly none of them sailing.
Am sure it does what it does very well. 
But tbh I was more commenting on the water they use , must be like sailing at the bottom of a quarry. You can why British moths were sailed there until quite recently.  Smile

Indeed not.
And the few coastal freeholders ain't going to make much difference in the grand scheme of things.

I moved into sailing at 27 years of age as my chosen sport of rallying became prohibitively expensive.  My point is that I think we have a serious issue with how sailing is perceived by the majority and from what's been said on this thread I am starting to feel that the perceptions of the teenage me might have been right and that sailors consider themselves to be in some way above 'the rest', snobs in fact.  If the majority of the population perceive that sailing is for the privileged few is it any surprise that it's hard to attract newcomers in the numbers we would like to see on the water?  For the record I still hanker to find the time to get out my tackle and hit the river banks yet again and expect to have to allow for passing boats in pursuit of this as well as being aware of the need to be responsible in terms of dealing with litter and tackle.  I am lucky to be a member of a fishing, sailing, rowing, canoeing/kayaking club just a 5 minute walk from home in Chichester Harbour.  I believe that the club was originally a fishing club and that sailing was a later addition  Wink
