So 7000 places = 1000 miles forward and 200 miles = 30000 places backwards.  So I better not relax then!  But if I squeeze round the Horn before the wind shuts off that might help!

If you look at the virtual satellite image a surprising number of people are going through the middle!

On the sailing front I'm trying to get used to only making 2 squares in a 12 hour period. I'm so used to covering 6+ that it makes planning much more difficult now.

Could of course be the Virtual Argentine Navy on 'exercise' Shocked

Craiggo - I was off work and bedded down for lots of Xmas.  It's amazing what a difference being able to take all the shifts can make!

Not good. Dropped from about 11.5K to about 18k in positions, but without any strategic advantage gained.

I don't know if it is the same mid atlantic, but the forecasts seemed to change multiple times in a day which makes planning impossible. The wind is often in very conflicting directions from cell to cell, which doesn't help.

Basically into damage limitation mode now, so will slowly work my way back to your direction where the winds seems a lot more stable. Suspect that my 150 mile lead over you has turned into at least a 150 mile deficit.

When I posted the question last night I was still 50:50 over whether you would be better off or not.  Having looked again this morning things gave definitely moved against you!

You are right about the wind - not easy.  The leaders have gone far East, but I didn't see an opportunity to do that.  I am drifting slightly west now just to keep in what wind there is, but planning wise it is difficult to look more than 24 hours ahead.  I still do seem to be climbing up the leader board, (up until this morning anyway) but to be honest I have no idea how!

I think it is a bit like the southern ocean, sometimes you just squeeze through the gaps whilst others get held up. I was following someone who was just a square ahead of me, but they've now left me dead as they kept just getting through whereas I got trapped by every hole it seems.

What I've noticed is that your course has been a lot steadier and near the rhumb line, whereas I'm constantly hunting for the wind. To be honest I haven't get the time or inclination to keep the hunting going which is why I decided to came back your way. Being parked at 0 knots boatspeed yesterday for a couple of hours when I missed the wind change from square to square (and was trying to go upwind with a spinnaker) made up my mind. If you've got the options maybe it is better to be in at the coast?

Last night was the first time I gained places in a few days, so maybe luck is turning a bit.

went on holiday, missed one of the mid-pacific gates and way tooooo far to go back, so I'm doing the only thing left (and I should have done earlier as it's been hopeless for a while), I'm going to park, nose on, to Antarctica!

It is a bummer when that happens, I was 'lucky' in that it only took me about 24 hours to get back to the gate.
