Nothing at all like what I'm used to, ok so our sailboard events might have been a bit wild, but even the Merlin Boys manage to still break the bar record down at Salcombe now and again, maybe explains why their numbers are steady. No social activities = no rear end of the fleet fun brigade.

Who wants to hang out with emaciated 1000 yard starers before they pop off to bed at 9.30...

Alternatively, the ageing demographic.  Have they finally learned that hangovers are not nice?

Oh dear not this one again !!

969 is tough but in time it will sort itself out.... The 'un-reformed' PN system methodology always tries to 'throw' classes 'back in the middle of the fleet' of course - it was developed in the age when handicap racing was definately for the 'odd balls' at the back of the dinghy park so they could get the odd race in ..... today fleet racing is increasingly the thing you do at class opens and championships but has now declined for about 3 decades at club level.   At local clubs many, perhaps most now, usually race within one or another handicap structure.  In other words the world has moved forward and changed and the 'classic PN system' has arguably been out-grown...  It never really could assess the potential of a boat itself, rather than the boat/crew/location/conditons mix.  You can justify it anyway you like of course  but the bottom line is it does not even claim to measure 'boat potential' in isolation.  If you only buy boats with 'good' PN's then maybe stay with the traditonal classes .. preferably ones with lots of antique examples that dilute the impact of good boats and faster crews.  Don't go anywhere near a new class until dilution 'helps' - you could get canned !   But if you like the boat .....

Another observation is that we have yet again got quite few suggesting to the the world what the handicap should be of boats and classes all too often they have not ever sailed themselves....  You can  massively increase the credibility of such comments simply by asking to try one first ..... Wink

For the record - Icon hulls are, or should be <70kg.  We do have a very much lighter rig than the Tasar of course - but it is not a rotating wing section one.  Icon is faster, particularly in lighter breezes where the Tasar can too easily get bogged down but it is not as fast as a decent modern and sorted Merlin ... but if you sail one and make a minor mistake we might just get you though !!   (Before you ask - I have sailed both Tasar and Icon classes pretty extensively and have occasionally helmed a good MR as a guest).

BTW Icon is one of only 2 boats that have chucked me out the back due to sheer acceleration .. ever.   And the handling is simply gorgeous - it is simply a joy to sail and very forgiving.

We and the CA will be releasing some really exciting and great news concerning Icons future very soon.   This will be released in August ... and not before !  In the meantime we are offering a couple of Icons for those interested in trying something 'completely different' at the various sailing weeks coming up soon.   If anyone (ie YOU) are interested in say Camel Week or Pyfleet Week or similar get in touch.. ..... wot you got to lose ?

Mike L.

The idea of staging an event, is to enjoy the activity and to encourage others to enjoy that activity we usually help them, we have a couple of races then break for lunch, then go out for maybe one more, unlikely we'd try and cram four races in one day. We didn't sell customers new toys then give lots of hot shots boats to compete with them. When the race is over we used to stage 'happy hours' where folk meet in the bar, i don't recall a single one of you unsociablet**ts even near the bar, I went there several times, between getting the problem with my boat fixed.

With a few exceptions that have become friends I found a lot of total a-holes, that I wouldn't want to be in the same place with ever again, never mind pay for the privilege and certain not worth spending another day with when there was grass at home that needed to be watched growing.

All day on the water, no time to fix anything if it went wrong which it did and I certainly wasn't the last boat on the water, being timed out there were lots of folk who probably paid good money for their boat like me, whilst the flown in hot shots set the pace.

You see that's the difference between you and I, I don't mind coming last, i don't even mind other folk bigging themselves up at my expense, do you think for one moment if I were actually good enough to beat anyone I'd have been crowing about it? That's called humour, I know you don't get it, not many folk down there would, which is the difference between us, the doing it for fun, the craic bit, that's the bit your missing..

Folk doing it for fun and pleasure in their leisure time with their own money...

Your way is f**ked, good bye, you're not going to be around much longer...

So what should have been done differently?
Stayed ashore for 2 days as it was too difficult for you (given you hardly covered yourself in glory on the practice day in a F2)? And not had an event at all?
Kept 40 other boats waiting for an hour for you to manage to finish their 40 minute race?
Not gone for a curry because unlike the vast majority of the rest of the fleet you could not organise yourself to get to an organised meal?

Or should we all have just carefully and respectfully followed the great one then capsized and struggled to get the boat upright just like Him? After you Oh Great One?

You'll be telling us next that the TdF is all wrong because the competitors have to go up hills as well as down, pedalling is un-dignified and its not fair on those who can't keep up! They're competitive sports FFS.

If you do actually have any useful, practical ideas, we'd all love to hear them, because you've not outlined any so far. [But perhaps on a new thread, we appear to have kidnapped this one. Plus ca change.]

PS In any answers, you will need to overcome the response "114 Merlins at Salcombe" through rational explanation not pathetic insults to 228 people

Tasar is 68 kilos. Old ones are good, still stiff, older ones are better, stiff and lighter. Very comfortable with single floor. No kite but crew kept busy with gybing mast and technical gismos. Terrific acceleration, good in a blow but stick in the light.
