That's been going for some time ![]() Actually you seem to have been sailing good courses, cause everytime I take a risk/opportunity and put some distance between us, you keep reeling me in with slightly better wind and angles. I think the only way to truly break away is to hang on to the tail of a weather system that the other just misses. |

Its been frustrating watching you from behind and sitting in lighter winds and not able to do anything. Went out this evening thinking i would go through the ice gate only to discover when i got home i'd missed it so now sailing in the wrong direction. Not sure i can get there before its time for bed which will be even worse.

That must be frustrating.
rwoofer and I have been on a good run over the last week or so, although I had had a few glasses of wine yesterday and took what now looks like the wrong decision over night. Oh well, easy come easy go...

Hmmm I (simong) seem to have surrendered my lead over all the other boats without pro sails when I gybed behind rwoofer to make the gate yesterday. Well done rwoofer and dougal13 who have both passed me now, I am going to have to work hard to make those losses back.

Christmas really did me in! A more northerly route south of new Zealand looked promising so I set it up and left it for two days. When I came back my 100 mile lead over marmitelover was a 200 mile deficit and Matt has just sailed away. I can't see much opportunity in the coming days as we will all be reaching at similar speeds. Frustration is creeping in again. On the plus side as long as I have WiFi I can play on my kindle hd fire

Looks like Bootscooter will be passing Cape Horn as the first forumite in a few hours. Well done. I should hopefully be passing within 24 hours.
Some observations from the last week: I've been marking the Virtual Regatta News boat for the past couple of days. It has the Pro Sails and my impression is that in the wind range 15-30 knots it is consistently 1-2 knots faster. Right now it is on the same heading as me in 23.2 knots with a boat speed of 21.9 knots. I'm one square away in more wind with 25.4 knots and can only make 20.4 knots. That is quite a difference. I'm only able to stay in touch by the fact that the southern ocean weather systems tend to go quicker than the boats. This means that unless the front boat can keep with the weather system the wind tends to be stronger for the boat behind for more time than the other way around. So what should be a 5-10% speed advantage ends up being less than that. However, the big gains can come when the front boat makes a window that the one behind just misses. All suggests to me that luck with the weather systems plays a big part for all of us. |

I agree. It has to be the main reason we have put so much distance on Sparks when the three of us were neck and neck a couple of weeks ago. I have been right on the coat tails of a few weather systems which has carried me through while those behind slowed considerably. It is actually pretty similar to the real race... |

Forcibly logged me out and now I can't log in. Currently heading north with Patagonia straight ahead, when I should be heading south
