The question of the ballot paper is: -

"At present, the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?"

I would interpret a No vote as you want to stick to FPTP.  If the wording was more vague you might be able to argue you wanted some other system, but they seem to have made the wording explicitly be almost an either/or type question.

You know what Jim, we agree on something. It would be daft to vote in a worse system, I happen to think AV is a better sytem than what we've got....it's just not the best alternative imo.

Edit:
Whatever happens the parties will put a spin on the result in a way that suits their world view....Guaranteed!

I don't think anybody is missing the significance of the first preference, it's just that it's not that significant under AV.
We can be sure that the majority of constituencies, will go to at least the 2nd preferance for some.

How can it be simpler than just selecting your prefered candidate?
Currently some vote tactically in a few constituencies, but not many, AV would be asking everybody to vote tactically, although of course you don't have to make more than one choice!

Well I've voted and in the end went yes, I guess just as a protest at living all these years in such a safe Tory seat, not that it will make a blind bit of difference, they'll still win even under AV.

Whether the result is yes or no it won't be representative of the country because it is unlikely that there will be anything like even a miserable 50% turnout.

If only 40% bother to vote then surely the majority favour a system where you don't have/need to vote?

Apparently, studies have shown that quite a number of people vote for who they think is going to win, rather than on any belief system. In the same way that lots of people who don't know where Liverpool is support their football team. You can reform the scoring system all you like, but when the raw material is the Great British Public, there are limits to what can be achieved.

I suppose writing down a few numbers will require a bit more intellect than scrawling an X.
I voted by post, hopefully I put the right bit of paper in the right envelope....

How do you know that?
Are you assuming that everybody would make a second choice?

Personally, I would not put any of the 'main' parties as a second choice, although I expect some people will. I saw a posting on a news site today where someone with fairly clear socialist convictions said he would put Lib, Lab, Tory as 1,2,3. Why would such a person ever want their vote counted for the tories FFS?

If it does happen, I hope it stirs things up a bit, gets a few wider issues discussed and shows a lot of the pollsters and commentators to be the useless waste of space they really are.

Also if it's a Yes, people will want an election to try out their new toy won't they?

I voted No. While I accept that the FPTP system will allow candidates with less than 50% of the vote to be elected, I don't believe that electing someone with a whole load of "#3" votes to bolster their lack of "#1" votes is any fairer.

FPTP elects the candidate who is most popular.
AV elects the candidate who is the least unpopular.
I don't like double negatives, myself.

Well, thanks to work, kiddie swimming lessons and bedtime, and being on my own currently looking after them, I'll not be voting. Not that I'd decided which way to vote, anyway. Maybe there should have been a "don't know" box, like on opinion polls...

My apologies to the "people have died for this right" brigade, but actually, I don't think anybody has died over this decision, and I don't think it will affect democracy one way or the other.
