I raced against Tom Gillard and Steve Cockerill (them in Streakers and me in my Radial) at the Grafham Grand Prix a couple of years ago in marginal planing conditions and I definitely pulled away frrom them on the reach.

In that case I'd be extremely interested to see just how fast you could make a streaker go on a reach   Smile

Come on guys and gals let's not ruin what has been a good thread up to now. The OP asked for advice and not a 'how fast is this boat' and 'my boat is better than yours'.

The advice given here with regards to the Streaker, Laser 4.7/radial, Byte et al is good.

Are classes age related then? Byte is the Youth Olympic boat. I had better sell mine before my 65th birthday next Wednesday!

I would go for the Radial despite  the whole Lasers are slow and rubbish etc- all complete rubbish but I wont go into that now!

The Radial has big fleets of similarly aged sailors and all the RYA pathways associated with it while there is nothing around for the byte, streaker or anything else- it is THE obvious choice in terms of racing and it's a sure fire way to get out there, have guaranteed tight racing whatever your skill level aswell as them being a blast when it is windy!

Don't however go for the 4.7/Radial combo- the only way to get substantially better at heavy wind sailing is to sail in heavy wind and if you go out with less sail, then pitch up to a radial event where it is windy you're going to wish you had the practice in the big stuff!

Cheers
PHS

I just thought I'd resorect this thread as we have just sold our Splash dinghy to a teenage girl of 15 from Chichester. She currently sails a topper in RYA squads. I say this to put some validity to this post.

She test sailed the Splash before purchase. I will explain how happy she was about the boat by saying; it was extremely difficult to get her to come back in from sailing as she was enjoying her self so much. And when she did come in the smile on her face was enormous!

The boat fits me, it's so responsive and quick, I love it. I paraphrase, but that's the basic view of a teenager about the Splash. I would urge anyone looking for a singlehanded for a teenager too small for the Laser (and there are many) to seriously consider the Splash.

+2 the teenage girl Jack Sparrow refers to is my daughter.
She's still racing her Topper but has fallen in love with the Splash.
She's only about 5ft tall so too short for a laser (with any rig).
The Splash looks and feels nice to sail and is perfectly suited to her height and weight.
