You're suggesting a 12ft skiff should have the same mast length as an RS feva? (although technically the 12 has up to 38cm more beam) |

You're not an engineer as well by any chance are you 'grim'
I'm sure somewhere somebody must have worked that out by now.. The "how big a mast do I need to make this boat do what I want it to?" Question. Surely even Lord Bethwaite must have worked that out.. If it's a displacement hull of w length and x beam it'll need some fraction to equal y mast height because of the requirement to support z sq mtr of sail area.. And if it's meant to plane, then the wetted surface area drag would have to be factored into the equation, I'm not a mathematician, nor an engineer, but there are plenty of the pedants about that would have worked it all out.. The hull plus crew weight versus the drag coefficient of the wetted surface... That will all give a sail area requirement, which in turn will give a mast dimension. Then all they need to do is come to us at Integrated Rig Systems Inc tell us how many bits they need and bobs your sisters father probably.. Edited by G.R.F. |

A young engineer was leaving the office at 5 p.m. when he found the CEO
standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand. "Listen," said the CEO, "this is important, and my secretary has left. Can you make this thing work?" "Certainly," said the young engineer. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button. "Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. "I just need one copy." |

Got me there. Not a naval architect or anything but good honours in mech eng with a specialisation in fluid mechanics. Not that I do any engineering nowadays, but . . .
Ahem, yes they would be the same pedants who would have asked stupid nitpicking over-detailed anal questions like: - unstayed or stayed mast? - deck stepped or gate? - spinnaker or not? - trapeze or not? - stiff hull or tupperware? There are other even more pointless questions that these beige-trousered sandal-wearing propellor-heads would ask, such as "target crew weight? flat water or waves? performance or sailability?" but you have already stopped paying attention by now. There is no analysis of hull dimensions that will tell you the 'right' size and spec of rig until you have answered all these other questions. If it was that easy, why haven't rigs always been designed to the same formula? Oh, that's right, because the whole industry have either had their heads up their *rses or because it's a conspiracy set up by the illuminati, who are all 49er sailors. ![]() |

OK, deep breath, GRF, with my helpful head on, I am also
happy to continue this conversation without trading stinging repartee with you - if you'd like. Pile in with the engineer jokes anyway, they're all good 'uns, but if you *really* want to explore why putting a rig together for a dinghy is fundamentally different from putting a rig on a windsurfer, let's have at it. But be prepared for people to point out certain, erm, wrongnesses in your thinking ![]() much more qualified to talk about it than I am. |
