Laser is really really bad. There is nothing to them and they are now £4300? For £700 more you can get an RS500!

I think the 14 covers both ends of the spectrum. A new one with the latest and greatest everything, maybe £22k. A penultimate with carbon goodies around £1k which represents one hell of a lot of boat for the money

Looking at Ebay, I'd have to say the SKIPPER

How many of the damned things did they make?  There's always loads of them on there for 100's of pounds , or is it the same ones getting bought; new owner sails it then realises they've been stoopid and bangs it up for sale again!

Overpriced as in a lot of money for a boat that isnt worth it like a boat that has poor build quality, fittings, foils, spars etc for a lot of money. I agree the 505 costs a bomb!

It is a myth 14's are not TOO expensive and certainly not over priced, the 505 on the other hand makes a 14 look cheap

With a 5oh you end up paying for all the Pomp and Circumstance than comes with the class though. Where as 14s are without doubt worth every penny

Depends whether you mean overpriced or expensive.....and how you classify overpriced!!

If overpriced means little speed for lots of money, I'd nominate the Optimist for kids or Solo for adults. However, in terms of the amount of profit the builders make on them, they'd be quite a long way down and speed isn't everything as these classes have some of the best racing there is.

As far as just overpriced goes, I'd probably nominate the Topper. Although its one of the cheapest boats around, the cost of the tooling must have been covered a long time ago and a few kilos of polyprop doesn't cost very much and there aren't really any fittings on it!

What always amazes me is actually just how cheap a bare hull actually is given the amount of work involved in making one. The cost of materials if you're using stuff like epoxy, carbon or kevlar isn't insignificant either! It's the fittings that make most boats expensive.
