No racing on Monday for anyone (so Star and Tornado results stand).

Finals of Laser and Radial today, so Charlotte and Goody in the medal race.

I don't dispute that the tables would be turned in many other classes of boat.

However, with regards the Finn squad. I think you need to race against these guys to fully realise just how fast the top squaddies are. Particularly off the wind and not just in free pumping conditions. Also the point of funded squads is to try and create racing thoroughbreds for a particular class of boat which the RYA with the help of Skandia are achieving with notable success.

As regards Nick Craig, he's now moving on to B14's. I for one will be sad to see him leave the Finn class but I won't miss the sight of his boats transom disappearing every race.

Can't help thinking that Nick could probably give these guys a damm good run for their money if he did put his mind to it though.  Me wonders what might happen were the tables turned and the Finn guys entered an RS400 event against Nick or one of the many other dinghys where he is world or national champion.  There is life outside the squad.

I agree the key events to win last year were the Worlds and the Pre-Olympics which Chris and Simon won.

In the last Olympic cycle they felt they peaked to early (1st Worlds the year before, 2nd Worlds the Olympic year then 3rd at the Olympics). They do not want to make that mistake again!

Perhaps I shouldn't say it but it seems like a very "British" attitude says what happened after a relatively poor start to the series! Just look at Ben's first day at the last games...

Looking at the Lasers (and Radials) they will be in big wind and huge waves today on course 5. Expect another couple of wins for Tom Slingsby in the standard and our own Lizzie Vickers could do very well in the Radial. Although there is no doubt in my mind after watching the racing yesterday which Charlotte is sailing the best out of all the girls.

Not to do a disservice to Stevie and Ben, who are sailing fantstically at the moment and have been for the past year. But you could have said much the same about Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith in the build up to the last Olympics. It is also interesting to note that Hiscocks has yet to be selected for a pre-olympics, always being beaten to the punch by one of the other top Brits. No doubt Stevie and Ben will make the fight hard but I know where my money would lie, even in light of recent results.

Don't know why everyone is so hung up on Draper and Hiscocks? Yes they have performed in the past and have an enviable record.

But.. Stevie and Ben have been quietly going about their buisness since the Europeans last year have consistently beaten Chris and Simon. Lets not forget that at the last Worlds Stevie and Ben were third.

Seems to me these guys have had little credit in the press or elsewhere for what I consider to be our best chance of a medal in the 49er class!

Hi all

I've been an interested reader of this forum for a while. Just thought I'd try and clear a few misconceptions regarding the Nck Craig and the GBR Finn squad.

The truth is the current top 3 squad members were not at the Europeans, Ed Wright, Matt Howard and Giles Scott. Also Ben and Chris Brittle were on various AC duties. Nick did exceptionally well to beat Mark Andews and Ed Greig who are currently at the lower funding level within the squad but are definitely names to watch for the future.

A more realistic analysis would be the recent nationals, which Giles Scott won at a canter. Nick came second just pipping Andrew Mills who I think I'm right in saying trains with the squad but as yet is unfunded.

Nick is an exceptional "amateur" sailor but to compare him with our top squad guys is incorrect and does a disservice to the exceptional hard work that our top funded sailors put in to achieve a level of sailing that us amateurs of all levels could only dream of.

Finally come on the Finn squad in Cascais, Ed Wright lying fith and 5 more lying in the top 30, out of a world class field of 73,  without Ben present!!!!

At the half way stage it looks like Sarah Ayton is gradually pulling away from Shirley and the chasing pack in the Yngling...

I spose it is the most competeitive sailing you can get really, at least the other GB boys are doing us proud on the 49er! A long way to go but top result for them!
