Some of the underutilised clubs I can think of are, Barmouth, Aberdovey, Stranraer.

Sailing's best kept secret has to be our favourite venue, tucked away in the middle of Wales.
Also we're just back from Roadford Lake in Devon which would be a superb inlands venue if only South West Lakes would sort out the infrastructure and put in a proper club house and decent toilets and showers for adults and campers rather than their current fixation on youth groups. Hope Cove is only just round the corner from Salcombe which has all sorts of sailing and accommodation so I don't think it would work. Edited by patj - 16 Jul 18 at 6:43pm |

I think the problem for Hope Cove is a complete lack of sailing infrastructure, as a concept it sounds interesting. Though it is protected by a sea wall, this bit of coastline could be quite hostile if it were a lee shore in the prevailing South Westerlies!

That's half my wondering though, how much shore-side infrastructure is really needed?
In fact, many venues spill over on to common ground for boat parking and often the main event centre is a marque or nearby village hall. Many events I've been to abroad the hosting YC is in a nearby town and at the event location there is zero sign of any club existing. Maybe because they have more YC rather than SC which are less likely to have the facilities associated with dinghy sailing... launching ramps, showers, boat park, hoses. I think the hardest thing for these pop-up venues would be where do they get the volunteers and race team boats from and where do they stay during the regatta if the nearest marina is some distance away.

Maybe the pop-up would be better organised by the class or classes involved. The whole "volunteer to run a championship" does require an awful lot of altruism to give up a week of your holiday entitlement if there is no concrete benefit to your club. And quite a lot even if your club does make some money out of it.

Well the Windsurfing Open Class lot that were the UKBSA they all seem to travel to odd spots and what you'd call the class run the event they have ribs and a couple of race teams. Then again half their members travel in pikeyvans and their events have no, what can I say, no heart and soul (= no bar to gather round and talk post race bollox). So I'd say it's a pretty crap way of running things and nothing like the atmosphere we used to get when welcomed to a good old style sailing club and Mrs Commodore would hand out the prizes and thanks us all for coming.

I understand what you say; but. 2 weeks ago, just down the coast from Hope Cove, at Bantham they held a Tribal Clash event.[ Crossfit team competion]. Very much a pop up event and apparently a great success. I know there is a big difference between 300 young people and 30 Solo sailors but itdoes show it could be done if you really wanted to.
I am sure Davidyacht would be PRO and would bring his launch for rescue purposes

I'm just back from a fantastic sea sailing regatta event in South Wales, where the number of members needed for committee boat/rescue was huge. We visitors enjoyed it for sure. If it had been some fleets nationals, I'd have been happy, plenty space out there for everyone. Four one-hour races, I asked for water once and windward boat once. Big fleets-Toppers, Solos etc need special events, smaller classes there's plenty opportunity to share Oh and having a club onhand for showers/beer etc was totally essential

Ilfracombe could be a great North Devon venue I recon, small yacht club there, sheltered launching but not much dinghy sailing on show.
