The classic line I heard went along the lines 'most sails shrink so we make them a bit bigger so when they shrink they shrink back to the real size...

Easy way to find out get a random sample and peg them out on the grass see how many have 'shrunk' five'll get you ten it's the real Laser sails that have done all the shrinking...

All my laser sails stretched , not shrunk. Host were about 3 inches longer in the luff by the time the down-haul had finished with them.

Either way, as RS400 points out, there is very little that can be done to make them bigger, without a square top and massive battens.

I'm sure they could make a faster cut. But most people buying them don't want a faster sail. You want a sail as close to identical as possible for training.

Look we all know Laser and Laser sailors are demons from the underworld, pawns of the devil and versed in all manner of dark arts. Therefore it is no surprise that a Laser sail can be made that is exactly the same dimensions, yet is at the same time bigger than a standard one.

Of course, if you splash holy water onto one it will burst into flames and you will be able to tell.

I did not realise that anyone actually raced a Laser seriously anymore so just assumed that the replica sails were for people like my 17 year old lad that wanted a boat to go chill out in on a sunny afternoon...but perhaps I am wrong

Let’s be brutally honest - there are far nicer boats to sail than the Laser, even at the £500 end of the spectrum; therefore it seems only logical that the only reason to sail one is because you take the racing reasonably seriously.

Or to put it another way - you buy into the class, not the boat.

True but Laser was designed as a beach boat and it still fulfils that role passably well......

No doubt the original comment was intended to stir, but I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a lot more "serious" sailing going on in Lasers than any other class in the UK or the world.

Its all relative - 25 years ago when I was a lad the Laser Nationals at Weymouth were a very big deal and most clubs in the land had significant fleets sailing each weekend. Laser is still a global brand but I see one sailed occasionally in races at our club and very few at Great Lake events. How many Lasers at the nationals last year? Most seem to be growing weeds.
