It would be quite a fun thing to tag along on the Laser circuit and give it your best shot competing against the great and the good of the game. A good way of motivating oneself to get fit, push yourself to your limits, find out exactly how competent you are and not die wondering. Giving it your best shot and getting the most out your potential is a great and worthy thing to do. So good on him for that.
But he's not got a chance of qualifying for the games based on either his current form or his demonstrated rate of progress. If his sponsors haven't done their due diligence, well that's their problem. Perhaps they have and they don't care how good he is, their sponsorship is a tax write-off, may not be for very much anyway and besides, he gets them exposure.
But he does appear to exaggerate his chances and skill level somewhat.

Ranked 301 and struggling to make the top 100 in a decent event ... Good for him if he can get sponsors to pony up with results like that ... he can sure sell better than he can sail.
