Would this windsurf mast do for a bowsprit (obviosuly cut down) or is it too heavy?

Wind surf masts have been used quite a lot as bowsprits some of them can be a bit flexable but are generaly OK  If you can get someone to give you a carbon one then OK but I would not shell out more money for a carbon windsurfer mast than a glass one.

Other things you could look for would be the tip from a broken carbon mast, just remove the fittings grind the track off and you have a nice round tapered tube.

You should have a go at scrounging for parts before buying as there are always bits of broken boat lying around that can be pressed into service.

I think the boat you are talking about has a wooden hull if so I would recommend keeping the rig pre 97 it is a lot of work to upgrade wider gunnals,  a snout to move the forestay forward etc

A conversion to asymetric is definatly worth it though.

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

You can get Pre 97 sails VERY VERY cheap!! I know of quite a few of the 13m kites you can use for literly pence! I know Tim has a 13m which he doesnt use anymore - ask him!

Have you got the boat yet?

guys, im still convinced your rushing WAY ahead of yourself, have you got the boat yet, if so then fine, learn to sail the boat and get a feel for it first, THEN and id recomend only then, go ahead with thinking about upgrades, its not just as easy as putting holes in the boat... you have to strengthen everything associated with the mod. and you also have to make sure its in the right place first, if your doing carbon/ glass work although it is relativley easy stuff to work with when you know how, it mite be worth getting some much needed experience with other smaller things first, as you may very well find youself with a boat that has a freshly cut hole in it but no idea where to go from, just make sure you have a clear list step by step of what your going to do and make sure you know how to do it all. Also it wont just be as easy as fitting poles etc, you have to be able to rig up the systems to make them work without jamming etc, this takes some expereince also, or that of someone else. Im not trying to put you off despite the long windedness, im just not sure your thinking about things in the right order maybe. As with everything you really should just get the boat and sail it as it is, you may find that its a potent handicap bandit at your club once you get a feel for it, in which case you can be racing it whilest getting the expereince and then when you feel ready go for upgrades, but if it works initially why ruin it and have the chance of making it unsailable straight away? Aside from my slight concerns it seems a great long term project.
