Its not that difficult to run a sailing club. Provided you can keep clear of factional fights and major cliques its not that big a deal. And sailing clubs tend to have a reasonable number of middle class people with business experience who can get drafted in. Its got more complicated in recent years thanks to safeguarding, H&S and so on, but its still a lot less than rocket science, and there's plenty of assistance and advice available from various bodies, not least the RYA. I don't find it hard to believe that the vast majority of clubs are at least adequately run.

Folks under 50 please note - there's no reason why you shouldn't get involved in club admin, its not that hard, and there must be precious few clubs these days in which you actually need to win an election. What doesn't seem to work is waiting to be asked. In the distant past it was regarded as useful experience for people in their 20s who saw administration as part of their future career.

They must be adequately run otherwise they wouldn't run, end of....... but that is an altogether different argument.

Not all clubs are run well, many are but not all. I say that fairly confidently as not all businesses or organisations are run well. 




This wasn't the main point of my post anyway.......It's the membership that dictate the success of a club and right now members need somewhere to go to escape the rubbish in the out side world. Clubs offer a secure, familiar, escapist form of reassurance. Just what's needed right now. 

When folk stop needing that place to go or find another place to go is when a SC club fails. This also applies to a certain degree to commercially forced closures.


SC's clubs provide so much more than just a place to race. The more I look the more I realise that Racing is only a small part of it.

Basically Kingsmead and Wraysbury Lake were out bid by carp fishing enterprises. I think, but am not sure, that they are commercial outfits rather than clubs. Odd to think that carp fishermen are prepared to spend more money than the over entitled toffs who go sailing.
Fortunately Silver Wing (ex British Airways) is still on its Wraysbury lake and is flourishing.

Lol - I guess there’s nothing quite as overly-Entitled toffism as yacht clubs taking handouts from a Tory Government during a period in time when others were being forced out of work and food banks were on the rise!

I wouldn't mind betting that there were some fishing clubs run as incorporated companies that benefitted from those same universal handouts and didn't hand them back. Your point is?

This week's punishment is to write out "I must not try to be humorous " 100 times.
Not withstanding WLSC and Kingsmead dying out during the " intensely relaxed about people becoming wealthy" Labour government. I don't suppose any Thames Valley gravel pit sailing clubs took any taxpayers money during the plague years as they don't employ anybody

Fishing is big money. Places like Chew Valley, the sailors have been second fiddle to the anglers for donkeys' years. When you go fishing, the major cost of the sport is paying the fishery, not like sailing where most of the cost is your boat and other kit. Anglers turn up often 7 days a week, so there may be many more angling users than sailing users, spread over many more hours.
