Somebody tell me this isn't true.

Its isn't true...

Dunno about Porsche 911: to continue the Top Gear theme its more like a Ford Transit : clumsy lump that carries tons of lard but given a sufficiently talented driver it is capable of getting round the Nurburgring faster than more modern kit without the talent steering.

I think you guys are being very unfair. The Finn is the fastest non-trapeze singlehander in the world - if you exclude everything produced in the last 50 years.

Thats slightly harsh on the Finn, the masts are very highly developed and the hull is (I'm led to believe) a good all-round, seaworthy design.  But they are blinking expensive, heavy and definitely not the fastest (unless Ben Ainsie is sailing one).

Its interesting the the Germans sail Finns and the Brits sail Lasers.  Does it say something about our national stereotypes (Germans going for quality engineering, Brits pragmatically accepting 90% of the performance for 50% of the cost).

I think it is also interesting that Morrison has designed the D1 but not the 100.  After all, he was the man behind the very successful 200, 400 and 800.

It's not just the Germans chaps the Finn is very popular even outside the Olympic circus.

The Finn masters events are far bigger than the Laser masters it's just we don't hear about it.

The Finn is a very popular class on mainland Europe.

What? This is too funny.

I know PNs aren't the last word on speed, but:

Finn: 1066

Blaze: 1047

Phantom: 1043

Assymetric Canoe: 873

RS300: 1000

Inter Canoe: 905

Inter Moth (non foiling): 980

Plus, of course, the nigh-on unhandicapable foiler moth

Precisely.

And regarding the D1, (cushions and all that stuff), well if I can be comfortable and go fast, then I would say that is quite a good selling point really. Similarly the RS100. It looks like it might be marginally comfortable to sail as well.  I think very possibly both will do well.  Slight overlap in their market segments perhaps, but not exactly a crowded one is it.

Whilst I admire the sentiment, use of metaphor etc, and certainly it is often the case (in my experience at least..) that less physically attractive people are easier to love because of sparkling personalities or highly developed bedroom skills that mitigate their aesthetic shortcomings.

To continue the analogy, and call me or the others here superficial, but it still holds true that nobody likes to be seen in public with an ugly heffer. Especially when one is paying money for the privilege!

Anyway function should always lead fashion, but it should be easy enough to make something easy on the eye within the D-One's requirements. Racing dinghies are not human, or even animal, so do not swing from the umbilical noose of their inherted DNA or an unfortunate fondness for beer and curry.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I reckon it looks highly capable and a great boat to sail.

I suspect there was a mistranslation from the German....
I like my Finn, but I would never claim it was the fastest singlehander about.
I don't think anyone is saying older folk can't trapeze, just that for various reasons many of them don't want to.
