I had great fun making a papier mache model yacht somewhere over half a century ago. It was rubbish, but I've always liked the idea!

Rotomoulding it sounds fun - you would need a waterproof binder that melted at reasonable temperatures. Perhaps it could be the perfect way of recycling old newpapers and candle stubs? Just don't leave your boat out in the sun too long. And probably not quite as strong as epoxy or plastic, sadly.

I laminated a collage into the deck fwd of mast on punk boat ie d zero prototype. Not structural far from it in fact so would probably cause delamination and failure in a load bearing area.

In the same vein as using newspaper, there's a very well known Danish OK with postage stamps below a clear finish. Stunning but how much work must that have been!

I am amazed how in high tech industries using exotic materials, e.g. Rolls Royce aero engines, engineers can use just software (and massive computing power) accurately to work out likely performance, variables, material behaviour and everything else without needing to actually build and test a new engine to destruction in the design phase.

If that sort of computing power could be applied to dinghy design we would have some great new boats.  But then they would cost the same as an airliner engine....

Ha that's a good idea... having trouble? Mail the boat to the finish line.

Dinghies are far from high tech industry and you are better served by hands on trial and error with most things.
Quite a lot of analysis happens on bigger boats now as the cost of experimentation is greater than cost of analysis and optimisation.

Laser Nationals c.1990 guy turns up from Brazil with his hull in a paisley pattern. Wouldn't take offers, and there were plenty!. Apparently - from what I can remember - it was wallpaper under a clear gelcoat. Wonder where that one went!
