You just have to be due North of the gate at some point - you do not have to sail through it, nor even be anywhere near it.  You can even get due North and then double back and go as far South as you like.  I know I am ok because the orange flags that mark the gate turned green.

Good spot! I never noticed the flags turned green.

Has anyone tested the bottom right scenario in my pictures? Looking at us all it seems that tad80 has tried it, so would be good to know for planning purposes....

I think you were really unlucky as Dougal took the same decision, but being just far enough behind you he avoided the light patch of wind you got caught in. He's now on my tail!

I think I headed South about 12 hours before Andy and that proved critical in getting into the better wind and south of the low, although I didn't get there in time to stay ahead of rb (although rb I'm glad you know I am behind you and you are beginning to feel the pressure!)

RB

not sure you mean bottom right in your pictures? as that is an invalid gate activation i.e. between the port and starboard end marks your boat has not been due north at any point.

if you mean bottom left then yes on the second gate i have just touch the line activated the green flags and headed straight south. even west of south to get a good wind angle.  Confused

Kicking myself as i thought i was going to be able to push east quick enough about 2 days ago to beat the anti cyclone but was wrong had to do some gybes on unfavourable stuff and those that went hard south have pulled out maybe 300 miles on me. but they have pulled up out on the prior leaders so am still only 500 miles behind the leaders.

This look like they are going to get a little tricky over the next few days - it all depends where the centre of the low tracks.  Could be some gains, could be some losses...

Big decision, I'm breaking South! I could carry on NE but I have a suspicion I'll run into a headwind on the other side of the Cape. If I go South I have a day of pain, then hopefully hook into a nice Low.

You are right, bottom left. Reassuring to know you can just touch.

Dougal, agreed. Can't really see any good routes through other than just trying to get East as quickly as poss.

As long as you guys keep heading east, it looks like you should just about out-run the high coming through. Me and Tom on the other hand will get dropped yet again

Craiggo - you RS700 784?  I'm planning to touch the gate and go south as fast as possible.  Glad to have caught a couple of 100 out of you and Tom.
