Another one flying the spinaker inside the foretriangle as rules of the time required. Good of Mike to do things according to the age of the boat.

Looks like one of the old-style spinnakers flown inside the forestay.  You stillsee them on classes like these Seabird Half-Raters, sailed at Wallasey, Trearddur  and Abersoch.

Could someone enlighten me, what was the point of that rule?

Was it to restrict the girth/width of the spinnaker?

Was it to outlaw hard luff flat reaching spinnakers?

Well by the numbers, it wasn't a Merlin spinnaker anyway, even if the size was correct for the old rules - there are not quite yet four thousand Merlins.
Merlin 6 has a cotton spinnaker of that size with deliberate holes in, presumably to reduce the pressure.

I am sure you have seen the boat close up Roger but it does have the original wooden drawers to store the kit in as well.

I have Paul, I sailed her with Mike a year or so ago at Hunts, beautiful boat but I had forgotten about the drawers.

I honestly don't know but I don't think spinakers were used for reaching I think they were mainly a running sail.
