puts forum winds into perspective- when we've had kids posting that their 29er/Cherub/Laser was out in 50 knots and how they sailed through it you know it's b**locks. I've been in conditions like that once... it's not pretty and everything is blown flat- even under bare poles.

James as said above, 61mph was recorded at 3:31 They beleive it under reads as its sheltered.
It really was like the end of the world, scary stuff. Just before i capsized i was flat hiked off the edge of the wing with the mainsheet to the knott.
There is no way anyone would be able to sail any boat in that. I love the strong winds, but this was dangerous. I think the cluba re very lucky no one was injured.

Indeed!!! Just after the start it was just like somebody had driven a truck into the rig, it was truly fierce, it wasn't a slow blow over with flapping sails we were just thrown flat!!!!! Once unside down even with both of us with all our weight on the windward gunnel it was hard to keep the boat inverted!!

I don't doubt you for one minute mate, but when it does happen (like this weekend) you feckin' know about it. It makes me laugh when reading about kids (and some adults) who were prone to the forum wind phenomenon. Down to the knot and hanging off the side like that.... I don't envy you.

Exactly, its like the old fishermans 'My fish was this big story' Nothing big or clever being out in a boat in that weather, it was very dangerous. It really makes you feel now matter how strong or fit you may be, you are truly insignificant when it comes to mother nature unleashing fury. Quite humbling.

I seriously thought i was done for, we had tried to right my 400 several times only to have it flip over and push us both under water, after several attempts of this i had nothing left energy wise and struggled to just stay on an upturned hull, we only managed to right the boat after the mast had snapped on the last capsize and got towed in by the RIB, i was prob very close to having hypothermia and was really disappointed there was absolutely sweet fa hot water, think the club ought to invest some of that 50K on a separate shower with its own hot water supply for such emergencies.
