All you need is carbon, either UD (Uni-Directional) which is where all the strands go in one direction. Or weave which is where the stands are weaved together like a cloth. Then you just soak that in epoxy, which is a mixture of resin and hardener (this is known as wetting out). Then try and squeeze as much epoxy out as you can. Then wrap it round stuff!

would this be the one im looking for http://www.wet-windy.co.uk/cgi-local/sh000006.pl?REFPAGE=htt p%3a%2f%2fwww%2ewet%2dwindy%2eco%2euk%2facatalog%2fWet___Win dy_Mould_Making_Materials_457%2ehtml&WD=carbon&SHOP= %20&PN=Wet___Windy_Fibre_Reinforcement_449%2ehtml%23a790 311#a790311

Raid car scrap heaps for old seat belts, ask the owners of the yard first though, you might not need to pay at all

I've never come across any decent (racing) rope in hardware stores, and certainly not in somewhere like B&Q. Some they sell could just about pass as a mainsheet or jibsheet, but most of the stuff I wouldn't even use to tie the boat on the trailer with!

You can buy stainless wire and webbing from industrial suppliers though, but you usually have to buy a complete reel, and 100 metres of webbing makes a lot of toestraps!

Oh, and ta for all the info on assys and symis, cos although some of it went right over my head, I've got a clearer picture now!!! (Oh and tim, I misread your reply - I thought it said fish shop. I'd never heard of one, i thought it was like a butchers or something!!! I reread it after that, I get it now!!!)

can you give us any more details about the boat you are looking at? eg sail number, name, design, age. We might be able to do some research into it for you.
