I had never used any kind of jib stick of jib pole, dangly or otherwise.

When O crewed 'da yoof' who has some N12 experience gave me a quick 101 and it was easy enough to tell when you had it right and had it wrong.

I then had a crew who had never used a jib pole and had not sailed for 6 years. He got the hang of it pretty quickly too.

As others have said if you are just sailing around then there really is no need to use it but it makes a massive difference when you do even if you don't get it quite right.

So you were bothered about the racing result when you took totty out?  I misunderstood your "sit here, pull this' comment, then.

It's really not difficult.  Don't pull it upwind, pull it fully on downwind and somewhere in between when somewhere in between.  There's no load in it (just the elastic it pulls against), so a 5 year old is more than strong enough.

I dunno- almost seems a shame it's on there tbh....

You don't have to use it do you?  Just leave it as you might jib track sliders.

you do if it makes the kind of performance difference Mike's suggesting....  anyway, consensus appears to be it is at least 'useful clutter', but I can't help but think it would be highly annoying sailing with one with a novice or timid crew...

As a Firefly sailor who hates the jib stick, and wishes the class would see the light, having a dangly pole is a no brainer. A novice crew can be coached on pulling the pole on in just a few minutes, and so long as you aren't fiddling with it every few seconds, can get 95% of the benefit without having to be a physicist. A jib stick, on the other hand, involves standing up, trying to poke a spike into a small hole that already has jib sheets in it while a sail flaps and bashes. Only really of use on a long, boring run.

The thing about the dangly pole is that you don't have to use it, and if you do you don't have to adjust it all the time. Beats leaning out of the lee side snarled up under the boom, holding the jib sheet by hand trying for some twist control, which is what I used to do...

The pole really was no issue. The only comment I would make would be that it would be nice if it was continuous and accessible from the side deck rather than the crew having to lean in (on a windy reach).

The boat is still a very simple boat (IMO) and what it achieves with 2 sails is quite simply astonishing.

I dunno- almost seems a shame it's on there tbh.... one of the most attractive aspects of the Icon was the pure simplicity which would make taking novices and/or children out on it so much more appealing.  A bit like the old 'club spec' Laser IIs we ran at uni- sure they were good for team racing, but they came into their own for taking out totty in the summer months.  No kites, No wires... sit here and pull this.

Start dicking around with anything other than the jib sheet and frankly that unique appeal slides out of the offering and I personally end up thinking you might as well have banged a kite on it.... an RS200 sounds easier / less technical crew than the above.
