google the name and you'd see a 3rd in the Moth europeans and potentially a win at the Laser Radial World Champs... guess it proves yoof squaddy stuff really teaches solid seamanship skills doesn't it?

Or it proves that this sort of thing can happen to anyone and don't take anything for granted.

Next time one of the infallible forumites get a scrape with the reaper I'd best remember to come back here to point and laugh.

You do that mike; make sure you get a belly full when sailing get legislated against too.

But quite right, don't take anything for granted.  Totally agree- I think that is exactly the point made on here- most of us certainly wouldn't when it comes to something as vulnerable as a foiling moth.

I think with some of them you'd have a long wait as I doubt they do much in a boat at all. There's one in particular who I wonder if he has yet graduated from an Optimist with his mother holding a very long painter...

Why; it's only the same image that is on the RNLI site ...

Copyright theft, especially easy for the RNLI or copyright owner to track if it has been hotlinked.
Successfully confusing ambition with ability since 1980.

It can happen to anyone, no matter how cautious you are.

We were caught out in a 40 gusting 50 knot squall in the solent, there were 3 of us 49ers out training with a coach boat just for safety. The forecast was for a steady 18-22 knots all day, we launched out of the Hamble ended up by Calshot unable to bear away after going upwind tuning. Waited it out for 10-15 mins but it was just increasing, at this point we had most of the daggerboard up just trying to keep the boat upright.

Next thing we all did was drop the mains, not easy but we just about managed it. By this point it was silly how windy it was, we were not able to keep the boat upright with just the jib up! Coach had it all on and could not look after all of us, not matter how hard to tried we ended up scattered in the western solent.

By this point we could not see the other 49ers with all the spray but were able to get the jib down with the boat on its side. Then started to head in with just the mast in the sky, which was enough for us to surf down the waves!

Someone on the shore had called the coastguard and the helicopter was hovering over one of the other 49ers, and we got a tow in to the river by the RNLI. We were very thankful to everyone that helped, we got interviewed by the coastguard to check we took the right precautions and they were happy.

All in all anything can happen, even when you think you have done everything right. Yes you should carry a mobile or VHF by yourself but leave this guy alone. He has learnt his lesson and hopefully it will teach a few more people to take a VHF or mobile.

Finally the RNLI and coastguard do a fantastic job

Sounds like he was damn lucky the RNLI found him.

Dunno about anyone else on here, but this is exactly why I'm a member of the RNLI and happy to contribute - it has been me out there needing help (in 1985) and the lifeboat crew were happy to help, didn't see that a leisure activity going wrong was beneath them or somehow wasting their time, compared to a commercial vessel needing help.

Yep, agree with that. I learned to sail through trial and error by sailing at the back of club races and trying to copy people. After 2 or 3 seasons I wasn't a half bad club racer so started doing my RYA  badges as I wanted to do my DI. I soon discovered how little "seamanship" I'd learned in my years of self taught club racing !

re the OP - most "outdoor" type sports such as fell walking, climbing, caving, diving etc as well as sailing have some basic safety protocols, which usually entails having the right kit and some form of backup. I think the Mothie probably had a close call and suspect he won't do that again in a hurry, so thankfully we can put it down to a learning experience.
