they should open up entry to a set number of assys, it's not like safety cover will be too stretched on that part of ther lake

I think it sucks.... windward/leeward sailors already have a very limited amount of opportunities to come together for a lighthearted race whatever their sail insignia. Then when opportunities like this come along it seems not many can be arsed to enter, saving their passes for class events or something. It's surely use-it-or-lose-it, no one is going to bother running w/l events for a 'minority interest group'.
I've always thought apparent wind asymmetric sailing on windward/leeward courses would get stronger with time. Certainly as the 29er yoof moved into adulthood, they'd bring with them a defacto acceptance for the tactical nature of w/l; even the Lasers sail w/l at the Olympics. However, this year's entries seem to suggest the concept is on the slide at first glance... it sucks feeling like you've been barking up the wrong tree for so long. ![]() Edited by rogue - 13 Jan 12 at 10:35am |

i think for alot of people with how life is thease days its hard to pre enter an event i know if im working the weekend for over time im licky to find out at the last min and these handicap events are only something i would do if the forecast was good and i was free at the last min with work its not like a class open meeting where you go anyway incase they sail and you want to keep your place in the year ranking

WingWang has it right, as the Assy fleet is so small why not open it up to another 30 entries? Safety cover wouldnt be an issue as we race when the other fleets are off the water and VV. Not sure you have been barking up the wrong tree Jimbo, the market for Assy boats is always going to be limited given the nature of most UK waters.
With the limit set at 150, the big traditional fleets have made a push to enter early and swallowed up the entry. Just look at the Merlins and Phantoms. Now we are in the situation where if you wanted to check the forecast before travelling 3 hours you can't

but with a Phantom you can pre-enter and know that no matter what the wind, or the course, you're going to get a good sail. Ideally you'll carry a couple of sails, one flatter than the other for when it's windy.
Whereas with a SMOD asymmetric, if it's a drifter, it's dull as sh*t and if it's too windy then it just becomes a fight, especially if you're hiking and your competition are on a wire planing upwind.... so yes, the market is self-limiting by default.

well, my dilemma is that if it is windy my wrist won't cope. That means I'm jumping in to crew a Vago, but I'll have wasted a space in the single hander. My bad....but if I hadn't entered in time I wouldn't have got a space. I'm actually hoping its either light or windy, I'm afraid, not the inbetween conditons that will suit most others.
Can I transfer the entry for Jaws if I can't sail? Is there a reserve list? |

Some of us in the assymetric fleet will be hiking and planing upwind (if it's blowing some)- and can (though few do) in theory have multiple sail cuts.

I'll be in the asymmetric fleet and I will certainly not be hiking upwind! Not if I can help it anyway...
