we have looked at the newly purchased Byte hull now and her indoors is secretly quite pleased with it...so we may have a streaker for sale.
My experience of the girls at the club is that they like to sail sociably, so I agree with the earlier post that you should see what your peers/mates are sailing, and go with that. There's no point in having something that means you are effectively Billy No Mates, always sailing by yourself. |

I cannot comment about the Europe, Steaker or Flash/splash, but can
about the Byte and Laser. Personally, I far prefered the Byte to the
Laser.
Byte Pros - Nicer boat to sail (in my opnion), the rig has to been designed for the hull - Easier to rig. The rig weighs 7kg, and it has a halyard. So, you don't have to step the mast with the sail attached. - Lighter, so easier to pull up the slipway. Also, can be cartopped if you so wish to take it some where Cons - Although, a very, very friendly class association, it is small. - Less likely to have someone to sail against/train/ask questions - Less boats on the second hand market - especially C2 Laser Pros - Very large class association. Therefore, lots of training availble - Youth class - There will always be someone to race again/train/ask questions - Lots on the second hand market Cons - Painful to hike - If you are (weight wise) in between the rigs, it's difficult/expensive (bying both) - Harder to rig in - I know some girls who find it difficult to step the mast in a blow - Heavier But you need to try
them out yourself. Neither are great
for two people, but both could cope, just as long as your friend was
small. If you were to sail more
regularly with your mate, then I would look at something else.

Much like the Byte being a nicer boat than the laser, the Streaker is also a much nicer boat to sail (though i've only been in the rooster hulled streaker). It goes upwind all on it's own without you having to throw your body all over the place and on reaches it absolutely flies!! I've never known a boat so comfortable to hike, it actually makes hiking a vaguely enjoyable experience.
I've often considered a Byte as well, it looks like a fantastic boat with the CII rig. Definitely try boats out! Things Jim mentioned about being able to easily launch and land a boat are such a big pro in my books. A light boat makes sailing such a more enjoyable all round experience as you can simply run it up the beach at the end of the day rather than struggling to get it out of the water. Doug H

the streaker is lovely. her indoors is spurning hers simply because it is wood. As well as being nice to sail the other advantage is that you simply hoist and lower the sail with a halyard. None of this sleeved luff faffing about. The Europe is equally lovely, and for the proficient or ambitious sailor has most to offer in terms of tunability. It is a complete thorough bred racer.
Try them all before you decide. nessa |

Thank you all for the highly valuable advice. I think I may ask my friend if I can test-drive his Byte to see whether I prefer it to the Laser. I will also investigate into the other classes mentioned
Thanks a lot |

And yet I believe the streaker is far quicker than even a laser full rig on a reach, picking up onto the plane much earlier. A much lighter boat than a laser. The weight is much more central and the boat has more rocker which means the boat is far more efficient dealing with waves upwind. As for being an old mans boat, one (in fact 2 including mr cockerill) of the top world radial sailors who's won the nationals on numerous occasions is older than the streaker national champion. Old mans boat is a ridiculous thing to label any boat as there appear to be all ages of sailor in every class of boat! The laser serves a purpose or providing a cheap singlehander with a tough circuit but that is literally it!! I sailed a radial 7 years ago, I sail a radial NOW and for me it's a far better boat to sail, much more smooth and enjoyable. That's my personal opinion. Edited by Doug.H - 02 Jan 11 at 9:46pm |

I do not believe a Streaker is faster than a Laser standard rig on the reach, although obviously it depends who sails them.
The Radial National Champion is 17, how old is the Streaker National Champion? |

Sorry, Jon my mistake as I thought you were the current national champion. I also didn't at all mean it to be a slight at you, more that it's just ridiculous to call the streaker an old mans boat when Tom Gillard who's really quite young is the guy at the top of the streaker class.
The streaker is slower upwind and downwind than a laser but from sailing the streaker and lasers, the streaker not only picks up on the plane much earlier but absolutely flies past a lot of boats. This is from a new rooster hull and no I don't have GPS data to back this up. I'm basing this on seeing and being in a streaker and decimating boats, laser included, on the reach. Much like I've been in an RS600 and flown by a blaze on a reach. I'll edit my post accordingly as I realize I have been a bit rude. ARGH!!! I can't stand boat religion yet it's so frustrating when people say stupid things like the streaker being a slower old mans boat, that I then find myself saying equally stupid things in its defence. I'm sure one day I'll grow up! |
