On the sk4 my tramps are made from a sort of plastic coated mesh, a bit like the leno mesh on this page http://www.sail-making.com/dbimgs/Mesh%20UK.pdf Very Grippy, and no hook holes!

That's not the same as being stuck on the netting though is it? That was between the hull and the rack where there is no netting. |

A whole new design and all we can criticise is the wing fabric?
I think it looks nice anyway.

It will be interesting to see how manageable the sheet loads are for the girls, with all that leverage

A quick few points from me :)
There is definately a market for this boat, just because it is being designed for a potential womens olympic skiff slot (if sailing stays in the games long enough for that at all - another argument I know), does not mean that there are people out there of whatever gender who will want a boat of this performance level and rough crew weight/ability. Suggesting the girls do not want a performance boat I think is actually rather patronising.
I am sure out Skiffman friend knows all to well what is and is not bought for the olympic squad hopefulls at various points in the 4-year cycle given he is very much a part of it (good luck Dylan btw, like the new vid!)
I have no doubt the Phil Morrison has designed a very well manered boat and that it takes a certain amout of inspiration from other high performance boats currently around both of his design and others. It looks like a great boat, and i count myself as someone looking for something like this.
Personally it looks like it sits a little high in the water when it is on its side, I can't be sure but it looks like it has alloy wings which seems a bit strange given the whole rig is carbon. Also I don't see the point in having the kinks in the wing struts, why not just design the deck layout so that they can be made straight, which increases strength and reduces manufactuing cost and complexity.
I suspect that if net tramps were a bad idea the 18s would have stopped using them a long time ago.
Should ISAF decide to go for a womens skiff I think the biggest problem this boat will have, and this is something that I think a number of the boats at the 2007 trials did not fully address at the time, is worldwide supply. Having all the boats built in one place and then shipped around the world is is a somewhat precarious situation imvho. All of the current boats (with the possible exception of the RSX which i know very little about) have a number of builders around the world. Are Hartly prepared to give up some of their potential market to other builders around the world in order that there will be localised worldwide supply? I suspect given the level of investment required to get to that point may mean not.

Phil, you make some good points. Just for reference, the racks on the prototype were carbon so they must have thought that ally was the best compromise for some reason or other. I think that the potential weight saving over carbon is actually not as much as you would think.
I think that when you see the list of names of the people that have been working on this concept you will see that it is a very well thought out boat, and has been through a very thorough development process to get to this stage... at which point it is by no means finished. 18 wings are huge - you wouldn't want the windage of solid wings or tramps. 49er wings are a similar scale to the Rebel's and that uses solid wings because Julian Bethwaite, who also designed 18s obviously, claimed they are easier to run on. I don't see Hartley giving up a small share of the potential market as a problem. Boat builders in the US, Asia, Oz etc would have to pay Hartleys (assuming they are the license holder) to build boats for them. Easy money for Hartleys! At the very least, Hartleys would still presumably make all the UK/European boats. But it does mean that the design needs to production friendly - you don't want too many bespoke fittings, or custom carbon jobbies. To my eye it looks beautifully proportioned and has clearly used good ideas from other designs (and doubtless has a few tricks of its own too), so I'm sure it will be a superb boat to sail. If it gains Olympic status it would obviously sell well worldwide, but is there the demand at non-Olympic level? My fear is that it may only take off if it is selected for Rio 2016, so potential buyers may hold back until that decision is made. I would love to see one sailing, I do hope the Y&Y test includes some video footage that you can access via the website!
