Well that was a bit worthless wan't it, never thought I'd see the day when I had to say..
More grown up one here Seriously when you look into the mirror tomorrow morning just after you've shaved, (if in fact you shave yet) you must say to yourself.. " Today I must try not to be a total saddoh and keep pushing the cast my vote button all morning on an internet forum." Then go straight off to the counsellor and get some help. |

How sad that, I assume, some single handed trapeze sailor did not like what the poll was showing.
I had just read the sensible and helpful comments from alanH, one of many sailors interested in passing on his views, when someone with too much time to waste decided to hijack the poll. Of course we can continue this valuable topic. While I had chosen to believe the pole figures I was somewhat surprised that the two person hiker was well ahead. My club like alanC's is dominated by singlehanders and I was interested in what his club were doing to offer the choice. There are many who prefer sharing the pleasure and being sociable and who, like the Rally Driver's navigator, are an essential part of the team, but who regretfully do not always get mentioned, but still love the SPORT. I suppose he or she used to throw his/her toys out of the pram, or still does! |

Oh no .... has someone been screwing about on an internet forum just to annoy someone else ... now let me see, who is the master of that?

Just clicked on GRF's link to SA and my brain immediately saw his status as 'Antichrist' rather than 'Anarchist' - subliminal confusion? |

Back to the point. Its interesting that people have mentioned the RYA syllabus' as being too single hander oriented, as far as I can see clubs can teach people in pretty much whatever boat they fancy, so arguably its down to the clubs to encourage double handers.

There should be an option for singlehanded but not hiking. It's the only way to fly!

The syllabus for 1&2 requires that they shall be able to sail on all points of sail + capsize recovery + make decisions in good conditions.......With a trend towards shorter more cost effective courses, I wouldn't think crewing would be taught in any significant way.......best stick them in single handers and do it. |

Is running shorter, more cost effective courses really in the best interest of a club? I'm not so sure. There's pro's and con's on both sides of that argument. Certainly would be in the best interest of a sailing centre, who is out to make a profit. In my eyes, a course should have at least an even spread of single handed and double handed sailing. It seems that most people would agree they enjoy sailing more with another in the boat, it would seem sensible to give that experience right at the very start - afterall, that enjoyment is key to getting people back after the course.

I'll second that, although I own a single hander, I much prefer sailing two man boats. For some strange reason I've been nicknamed super crew by a writer from the other dinghy magazine.... (And I must admit, I enjoy crewing as much, if not more than helming!) Jon |

Double handed brings in more elements of crew-work plus the interaction of people on the boat and is just more fun. Single-handed is more convenient. Plenty of people do both.
As for trends, I'm not convinced the proportions of single-handed and double-handed have changed that much in 20 years. The main difference is the growth of high-performance single-handers and the decline of the once-ubiquitous Laser. And yes, the decline of the single-trapeze double-hander. Edited by Stefan Lloyd |
