You're spot on, BBC had gone totally over the top on this year's show and I just cannot work out why Sue Barker keeps getting wheeled out to help host this thing... she's fine for Wimbeldon where her posh but bumbling ex-player style is OK but seriously on nights like last night she's just embarressing, the only thing you can say in her defence this year was that she avoided the white-trouser-suit fashion car-crash!  As for Giggs getting the gong, shouldn't have put a footballer in the mix, bound to get the great unwashed voting for him instead of a much more worthy winner - we could all watch the Tour for the next 50 years and never see an Englishman (well Manxman) take 6 stages again, Button's achievement was fantastic (and he has a personality) and Straus won the Ashes FFS

not sure whether you hope he never wins or whether he wont have to wait. I can only hope you mean the former.
He will NEVER get my vote after the last world cup when he said he wouldnt support England. i think he is a cocky idiot, i was just as happy when he got knocked out of wimbledon this year as when england won the rugby world cup.

As for giggs winning, i think it is a tad flawed, sure he has an exceptional trophy room, but would that not be better as a lifetime achievement, rather than an annual thing which is what i feel is implied with the sports personality of the year award?

David Haye got my vote because of his biblical defeat of the russian to become heavy weight champion of the world! thats with a broken hand as well. remarkable.

Im still gutted sailing didnt get better recognition in 2008, i know it was tough one between cycling and sailing.  in the world of sailing, the letters GBR on a sail sparks the same fear to the competitors as turning up to a sprinting race to find usain bolt warming up. British sailors deserve something someday.

Years gone by before telephone voting how was it awarded ?

yes the public voting is ridiculous - how can it hope to balance football and cycling?  also look at the Strictly result this weekend!

James,

Definitely the former (and for the same reason as you!).

His England comment was a joke.

Its odd really.  Footballers don't win that often, and when they do its often World Cup years.  Giggs is a very good player, but I don't think last year was any better for him than many others.  Just goes to show how weak the field was this year, I suppose.

And hardly anyone watched.  Maybe the theme tune should have been RATM.

my vote went to Jessica Ennis because I go along and watch her perform. Not only can she jump way over her own height - very impressive when you see it live, but she also excels in six other very different disciplines.  When she's finished she always thanks the officials then she goes straight over to the sidelines and signs as many autographs as she can before she is dragged off for the media frenzy, where she is always ready to answer the daftest of questions.

so not only is she a brilliant, dedicated and gutsy performer, but she's also a great representative for her sport.

Go Jessica!

Quite! It will never warrant the insane level of importance the BBC try to give it while the result is determined by the masses. The problem is in the title - BBC Television Sports Personality of the Year. As that, it will always be another Strictly-Come-X-Factor. There are far more credible awards given by sports writers.

The nominations for this award come from the sports writers themselves.  A selection of decent rags, plus the mail and the mail on sunday, compile their top ten then send the list to the BBC who then simply count who gets the most votes.
