Well, if he can't windsurf already you'd have to bring up to your level of expertise in a dinghy, otherwise it wouldn't be a fair fight.  I'm trying to say his standard of windsurfing would have to be the same as your standard of dinghy sailing.

Unfortunately we can't do anything about his age and fitness advantage, but surely that will be more than compensated for by your wisdom and experience, so....

.....my money would be on Goodison!
the same, but different...

By a country mile ... he's a very capable windsurfer as are many of the top Olympic dinghy sailors ...

Well the correct answer is that it would depend on the weather..

Then it would fall down to the other participants

He would obviously win the Laser bit, and I'd probably do the same in the
windsurfer bit, so it would come down to the best results against the rest
of the fleet.

And any tactical stuff going on of course, if it was on a Lake then he
might get screwed by the odd shift..

Nothings certain in sailing..

But it would be a fun contest..

And further illustrate my point.

It's exactly the same thing sitting down or standing up...

I will however say on the windsurfing side (though this may not apply to this
exact convo), last year i recall speaking to an osprey sailor who's daughter is
a windsurfing lass and he takes her along to various coaching weekends. He
himself said he'd learnt huge amount about race tactics and winshifts
through listening to the coaches teaching these young windsurfers.

Grumpf,

How about you go over to sailing anarchy and talk to Doug Lord, I think it would be a match made in heaven for you.

I have to admire your self confidence (delusion) ... you don't think Goodison as got his head around shifts then, I believe he cut his teeth on a puddle and he managed a Gold medal at a very unstable venue?

He's also considerably fitter and a very able boardsailor but you still think you'd win .... well keep taking the pills grumpfs ....

See  http://paulgoodison.com/profile

"Paul, 30 was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire and was taught to sail by his father at a young age. He enjoys windsurfing, kiteboarding and plays golf in his spare time."

He'd whip you ...

Has racing taught you nothing Rick?

The day you enter any event expecting to lose.

That's what will happen.

Didn't they ever do "Positive Thinking" courses in How to Race in La La
Land..

I could still beat Dempsey on a good day, if the conditions were right and
suited my depleted skill reserves.

And the day I stop believing that, I'll quit.

And it aint about anything other than the enjoyment of the challenge,
there's no fun in beating folk who are not regarded as good, and there is
no shame in losing to them, nor should there be in the reverse situation.

Win or Lose as long as you enjoy the challenge and I still do, is what I
believe racing is about.

It's sport, it doesn't make me a better or worse person, but it sure is fun
whipping folk younger and cockier than you and Goodison on a One
Design Windsurfing Board against me, in Light winds, he wouldn't stand a
cats chance in hell.

And if it turned into a bit of a drifty puffy swirly thing, I might even get
lucky in a laser and would relish the chance to try it..

So yes I believe that and I aint on drugs. He's a big boy weighs more than
me and probably a lot slower as a result.

It's called Expectation chum, I guess we differ in that regard.

Edit; I've just noticed, he plays golf,

It`s not often that I find G.R.F saying things that I support but this I do whole heartly.

It`s taken out of context but it sum`s up how & why people should enjoy their sailing / racing.
