Mike, I still retain a soft spot for the L2 - nothing beats it on a 3-sail reach in a blow, once you've finally got the pole off the forestay. As you'll have seen on another thread yesterday, I even point people in the direction of your CA. Not sure where you're going to find a club fleet of 100 active boats anywhere these days - certainly not consisting of RS500's at any rate. In the meantime, I prefer to sail a boat that suits me, and I don't mind trying new things in case they suit me better. So far, nothing beats the V3k. Ross - we're racing Saturday too! |

I joined the Laser 2 fleet many years ago because there were 100 of them at my local club. When you can say the same about the v3000 I'll be happy to come for a test sail. In the meantime I'll be following the "20 billion can't be wrong" argument because that is the only hope I see of attracting new people into this sport.

Come down to the Medway Regatta at Wilsonian this weekend Ross and you can see a fleet of them and try one.

Who sails for light and medium winds though? You may race in
those conditions but ultimately **I** sail for or the thrills and spills of
heavier winds. One of the reasons I sail a Cherub is because I can get the
performance that the 3K has in 25 knots plus at 15 knots, even the little Cherubs
like mine. I REALLY want a go in one |

The V 3000 is an easier boat to sail than the RS500, but once you dial the
RS, across the broad spectrum of wind you'll get better results with it than the 3000, unless you are light or its beyond everyones power range windwise imho. The V3000 is a rocket sled on rails now, due to its weight (or lack of it), but the RS still has a tad more displacement volume which benefits it in the mid range and lower end of the wind spectrum. I remarked on it because of what it has done for the results (and confidence of D&D) there's nothing better than seeing new blood at the front of a fleet to shake things up, they may even start listening (come to think of it one of them did) to the tactics chats we do to encourage the youngsters. So RS500/V3000 it matters not a jot unless the conditions are kind and you know what to do with it really.. |

Mike I believe it's 12, maybe one or two more. We're a better marketing team because we really believe in the boat we sail! I'm guessing you're a Laser 2 sailor, which I was every weekend for five years in the '90's. But the latest 3k's are really everything I ever wanted in a Laser 2 (like a controllable rig, and fittings of decent quality) and a lot more besides. You need to try one before you comment further. Just pm me your location and we can try to fix you a go; if you want to criticize the V3k after that, fair play. |

Thiis is what's known in the trade as the "eat sh**: 20 billion flies can't be wrong" argument. Sales figures (which RS have not published in recent years, although they tell me they will be giving YY the Racing Classes Review data this year) are a useful guide to the popularity of a boat, but only one of a whole host of factors in working out which is the best boat for your needs... |
