John Ilett was the first to really get the system working well enough to outperform lowriders... But im not sure whether he was the first to come up with the idea, or just the first to use it effectively.

A patent would have probibly made him a lot of money but its really against the principles of the class and from what ive heard hes always been very open in encouraging and helping others to use and adapt his ideas...

Tom

Thanks for the pictures that clears it up nicely. Must be a pain to launch like that.

Thats a good question... thinking about it i've never seen a foiler out on rough/wavey water.

I take it they spot a gap in the waves, then swim like hell. It must be a pricey gamble tho!

I've been trying not to think about that! Personally I'm going to have to accept there will be certain places and conditions in which I just can't sail, which will take some getting used to.

Foilers of that size don't sail well when its choppy anyway from what I have seen, at the Tiger the waves hit the back in mid air and it just pitched and the sailor bounced on the water about 5 metres away, then launched off wave, caught up with another went down the wave bow first again resulting in a spectacular flip

Sounds like foiling in waves is a good spectator sport then

But that would be right cos the want is following the water and doing "its job"

How does the wand know its waves?
