My first arrives this week.

The S10 shows speed, and also VMG upwind or downwind, with big numbers in waterproof case.
2 digits only, with blinking to show the tenths above 10 knots.

Some classes would not allow this to be used for racing, but quite a few don't ban electronic devices, so would be OK.

How does it do VMG if it doesn't know the wind direction?

No. It does not loose the data even when you replace the batteries. What I meant above is that it has memory capacity to store about 10 hours of position data. sorry for the confusion.

Does that mean if you switch it off it looses the Data?

I use the S10 and quite impressed with it. Compared to an Etrex etc the S10 has a homemade feel to it when you crack it open and this you must do often due to the design. The power switch is mechanical and inside the case as opposed to the 2 function buttons which are waterproof and are external to the case.

The case is built very durable but I had an incident where the clip holding it closed flipped open during sailing which I suspect was caused by a sheet. I am now using a large O-ring to keep the case clip safe from opening. I would either build this case with double clips and/or a safety lock if I were the designer.

However kudos to Velocitek, they replaced my waterdamaged device after the incident. I can name many manufacturers who in this case would have simply brushed me off telling me I caused the problem. I was very impressed with their approach and will recommend their products to anyone who cares to listen.

you can also buy an optional clip which makes it possible to clip the S10 device on a tiller or any other spar part thats about an inch in diameter.

Last but not least, the device is very useful if you travel to interesting places and wish to share your trip route etc with your friends. You can use the device in a car or during treklking for example and store position data for up to 10 hours and then export to Google Earth KML files which you can email around etc. Very much fun.

Hope this helps. Cheers

foretex series by germin show`e -- max speed - VMG - speedo --  countdown timer with the usual settings -- distance traveled -- waterproof to 1 meter ( this works )  100 odd quid deliveried to your house & straps to the mast / arm / leg / boom -- easy to read display -- easy to nav -- light weigh -- back light if desired run`s off 2 x double AA batterys -- i have found the battery compartment waterproof for the last two years. The most commonly used & by inference the most usefully of the units available in this price range.

Have you got one?

I am not sure that one shows VMG ...

... I have just been told they don't make that one any more ...

Water Resistance: Bombproof polycarbonate case is 100% waterproof to 25m (75 ft)
Display Dimensions: 64mm x 40mm (2.52" x 1.57")
Display can be easily read from more than 10m (30ft) away.

Seems like a better dinghy thingy than the Etrex, even I could read that.

The Etrex was advertised as waterproof which I suppose it is, however the battery compartment isn't. So as soon as it gets wet it stops working.

I guess I am interested in this one as it has big digits so I can mount it on the mast and be able to read it ...

Thanks for the above - I guess I need to read the bumf ...

I was hoping to find someone who has used it.

Rick
