Just forget about that 'enough room for taking someone else out for a spin' nonsense in the marketing blurb- upwind it's going to be no more fun to 'crew' than plonking the Mrs on the foredeck of a laser, facing backwards with her legs akimbo around the mast... with nothing to actually do they quickly become bored, get a wet arse and begin to moan a lot.

Me sitting in front of the mast with daughter helming on a Pico didn't work for me either. OK when stationary but once it started moving I got calls of 'dive, dive, dive' from the jetty as the bow slid under the water...

I guess I did well, so even if we come last in every race we enter, at least we've given it a go and I've avoided the dreaded riding school for a bit longer!

To be honest, I'm not really in position to be a 'nasty, overbearing husband-helm', I can't stand horses they scare the living sh*t out of me.  I'd rather fall out the back of the pack at a 200 event than fall off a donkey into a bramble bush- never trust an animal you either can't beat in a fight or doesn't taste good when griddled- a good epitaph.

Ahhh, not just me then!

I have discovered that the trick to use when they try this is to be firm and if that doesn't work run away (which spookily is similar to that used by the missus when the auld nag gets creative around the jumps). I've said categorically that as a Contender sailor I'm totally unfit for a battle of wits with a large beast... unless it's a Contender.

I had the choice of riding or sailing when I was 11. I'd done a similar amount of each and felt equally out of control on each.

The thing that won me over about sailing was the fact that if you got scared and panicky, you simply let go of everything and it stopped.

Do that on a horse at your peril! (yes, they scare the crap out of me as well)

Plus when a horse goes lame you can't get the epoxy out and make the next race...

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.

Well give me a machine gun, there's probably not many animals that I couldn't beat. I don't really trust in fair fights, much better to have an advantage

I have eaten horse and it tasted fine to me.

I look upon it as revenge for being trodden on alot by a welsh cob owned by one of my girlfriends back in the days of yore.  The only good thing about 3 day eventing is the socialising, drinking and networking with dodgy business blokes

I think you can get some real bargain boats out there if you know what you are looking for and don't become a fashion victim.

I find an RS200 easier to helm standing up when it's blowing.  Not that I have done this from choice, but rescue situations ......  the same young man 5 times in one year.

I got put onto a pony at age 5 and can still remember the fear all these years later. Will nobody get me off this thing?

I've never been really frightened sailing, although there were times I probably should have been.

This is like a therapy session!  I too hate horses.  Never ridden one, but they always bite me when I try and feed them. Ungrateful buggers.  We have a healthy, mutual, dislike.

Be warned though TT, I got a 200 to sail with my landlubber wife.  It was great (but it doesn't take long for them to think they know best!), and then she got pregnant.      .  Like getting a kitten, 200 sailing is the thin end of the wedge.

I hate horses too. Actually more correctly horse riders. If I told you I have a car that only goes at 3mph, and if another car over takes it at anyspeed it throws the passengers out, you would say - ' that isn't very safe! How did you get an MOT?' The answer is simple. No MOT required. No tax for road use to pay. Just go where you like and hold up the traffic, 'cos your posh.
