Spare ropes, a few shackles and blocks, loads of electrical tape and WD40. Try and take as much sailing kit as possible, there's nothing worse than having to put on a load of soaking wet clothes before racing, particularly if you're a young kid. A well labelled dry bag full of food and drink as the others have said is great as well. Make sure you've got your own copy of the SIs too, just so you can help clarify any questions that your daughter might have.

I think that the most important thing to take with you is the right attitude. I started racing on my own when I was about 10, but I wasn't really part of the clique at the local club (wasn't in any of the RYA squads and wasn't racing a tera or an oppie). The racing sometimes wasn't very well run, and I'd often get ashore only to be told that I'd been disqualified from the race for not completing all the laps of the course (despite other kids doing exactly the same thing and being given a great result) or something similar. My dad was always quite pushy too, he'd get really wound up when I ended up disqualified, made a mistake, messed around with the other kids while racing etc. I sort of felt trapped between my dad and the sailing club; neither of them were being very helpful in terms of encouraging me to keep on sailing and it really knocked my confidence. If my dad had approached the whole thing in a friendlier way then I think I would have got more out of it, so try and do that with your daughter if you can! If she fluffs up on the race track then I'm sure she'll be upset, but if she's more worried about your reaction to her mistake than she is about fixing the mistake (like I was), you've got a problem.

Good luck to you and your daughter, I'm sure she'll have an absolute blast. :)

This is very important! Do something to make your identical trolley look different to the other 200. Maybe write your surname on it too.

Have a few ideas in place for when the wind disappears and the boats are kept ashore, so boredom doesn't set in. It's usually OK if a child knows plenty of friends to chat to.

Even if the main food is taken on a RIB, you can still use electrical tape to secure a Twix to the bottom of the mast, or whatever.

It will be great fun for your daughter, but there is the potential for tons of parent stress, so try to adjust your mindset now, and prepare for it as a learning experience, and no need to rush around like crazy.

I took my little bro to the NSSA last year up at Bass, I would echo comments said here.
The "Did you have fun?" was always the first question I asked him and all the other Club sailors in our group when I greeted them with their trolleys. The fun part is more important than the results. taking part in each race improves their sailing and they want to do more.

As prep for the boat, laminate an A4 bit of paper, then take chinograph pencils to draw the course on. Make sure you both understand the course so you can identify the race area before launching.

Lastly, take part in all the social activities that are offered, even if its just going along to watch, it helps you both get to know others

Thanks for all your advice! I had better get shopping for extra layers, spray paint etc! I like the laminated a4 paper.. where would you stick it to a tera though? at home we write the course on electrical tape but she knows all the buoy numbers so its easier. A diagram would be good but perhaps a5 might fit. I am taking my friends son aswell, who is doing the nssa this year for the first time so he should have a little experience by then and might have some ideas.
Her boat name is on the front of her boat, I guess I need to remove this beforehand? apparently the front metre has to be clear for advertising purposes?

I have used electrical tape to write course notes on but now use a waxy pencil thing and write straight onto the deck. Went to this method after hearing of Fireball keeners with wind variation notes, shift intervals and all sorts covering their decks. I think the generic name is a chinagraph, mine is branded as made by Q-CONNECT.

I'd stick it next to the mast somewhere. Alternatively, I'm pretty sure you can just write straight onto the hull of the terra with a chinagraph pencil.

Not sure about the specific rules for that event, but I'd probably shift it just to be safe.

That's possibly strictly true but making a 10 year old peel her boat name off seems a little pety... Might be worth playing dumb on that one, i doubt anyone would protest her.

Yeah, don't ruin anything on your boat until you absolutely have to.

I'm not familiar with all the latest stuff in this area, but can one readily get a self adhesive material that could be stuck over her boat name and peeled off after the event?
