Alster-Glocke
Incredible race in the middle of Hamburg last weekend. We had to change crew every round, 7 times in all. 80 boats competing in this highly recommended race. We almost won it by 5 mins! Don't worry video is less than 3 mins. Sunshine shorts and T-shirt too. Re-post from X1 thread, but I think this crew changing will be interesting to all! That last shot of 2028, what's going on at the jib clew? Is there some deck mounted gizmo to close the slot or is it just the light playing tricks on the deck?

Nothing on the deck of a Scorp IIRC Grumpf. The jib cars tend to be mounted low down on the cockpit floor there the tank meets the floor though with just fore/aft adjustment for sheeting angle.
Shame there are so many plastic ones now though. The Scorp in wood is a very pretty boat!

I think you will find that the sail has multiple clew rings, when it is light you use the lowest one, and as the wind increases you use higher clew points allowing tighter sheeting of the jib. The bit you can see on the deck is just excess sail. Anyone clarify that for me? I am no Scorpion expert!

its probably more to do with the fact that when its get windy Scorps rake the rig massively. If you don't use a lower clew then the jib is not going to have the correct tension on the leach. They also have a method of doing the same on the leach of the main to lift the boom up to where it should be. I could of course be completely wrong about that as I have never sailed one, but seen a few disappear past me upwind when its blowing

Scorpion Nationals in 2012 was won by an 11 year old James Jarvey/Potter all wood boat. Won it with a day to spare!! |
