nor sure how many people on here have campaign an olympic class full
time but all classes are expensive! This is because you are sailing for over 200 days a year, and sailing a lot harder than most people. When we go out training we sometimes do over 100 gybes in a day, thats not good on the kite at all plus all the hoists and drops. The 49er is not cheap but its actually not that bad. To give you an idea a new boat including covers, trolley and trick bits costs us about £16000, we sell it after 2 years for £10000 so thats £3000 a year loss. A new set of sails cost £2500 which we need at least one set a year. Plus its nice to have a new mast a year. So a new boat does not really cost that much in the overall campaign costs. Also the new carbon rigs has had issues but they are being resolved and the new sails are lasting a lot longer than we first thought. The main laminate has got thinner for the square top to work but it is lasting very well. In fact the mains last 6 weeks of racing and the jibs and kites last between 3/4 depending on breeze. But do not get me wrong it is not cheap and i would love cheaper sails, boats and masts but compared to the overall costs its not alot. the 49er is the one class in the olympics that is moving things on, ISAF look to the 49er to try and test thing before moving over to other classes. I really hope the 49er keeps its place or it is replaced by an even more high performance 2 person boat (maybe foiler). |

If the 4000 is dull what do you call a 470? I was thinking
the performance equalisation system could make the boat a good one for heavyweights, lightweights, males and females to compete on equal terms. |

I'd far far rather watch the 470 than the 4000

Its been pretty well demonstrated that equalisation systems don't work at elite level. Its also worth noting that the 470 outsold the 4 Tonner 10:1 over the last 5 years. Even when the 4 tonner could be sold (seems to be 4 years since they've sold any, so you can figure the clss is near enough dead) the 470 was shipping twice as many boats worldwide. Its just a far more popular boat internationally. |

You have not convinced me that you were thinking! I dont think that there is any evidence beyond unsubstantiated bar room discussion that weight equalisation systems work. They continue to encourage typeforming ie tall skinny and agile is best |

Is the olympics not about being at your best, and performing at your peak? Surely the "tall skinny and agile" choices are better than the 40-a-day, 17 stone couch potatos whos closest link to "sport" is shouting at the TV where they are watching other people play?

Yes, but if the 470 was dropped and replaced by the 4 tonner I am sure the reverse would be true ...

Actually I'm not a fan of the performance equalisation thing. It seems crazy to have a perfomance boat with lumps of lead in it, and worse still for lightwieghts because they have to pull a very heavy boat up the beach.

Being one of the lightest in the 300 i do lose out in breeze. However in the lighter stuff i gain by more. Overall it makes no odds and with good boat handling and lots of hard work (hiking etc) I can still beat heavier guys in a blow. Why bother getting a RS800 and having lead in it? Seems crazy as well as adding unnessesary complication. IMO finn, laser, 49er radial should all stay. |

If you view the Olympics as not just the pinnacle of our sport but also the showcase then surely you would want elements from all over sailing. If this was motorsport you'd maybe want. 1. An open cockpit single seater. You can add/delete your own categories. The point is that you'd want one representative for each area. Maybe you'd choose F1 over Champ car for the single seat, perhaps you could argue a case for the 470 or the 800 or the Alto for the two person dinghy. But you wouldn't use both F1 and Champ - that would be showing the same car to the uninitiated and so would be a duplication in your showcase. It's for that reason that I think ISAF and IOC have missed a trick when deciding which elements of our sport are represented at this highest level. There is both duplication and omission. As potential competitiors we miss out and the non-sailing public miss the nuances between the Laser and Finn and think that all sailing is the same. Raising the profile of our sport is not always about the glamour boats but it does need to show that there are a variety of aspects to sailing to tempt the onlooker. As a Cat sailor I will miss the Tornado but I regret the Women's HP omission just as much. |
