I was actually really disapointed with the RPX. The deck shape looked uncomfy and a bit out of date really. The sail looked horrible. It all just looked very unoriginal and boring in every way.
Also, the condition of that prototype, I'm not convinced it was actually a good move putting it on display. It immediately puts the company on the back foot having to explain why it looks they way it does and trying to convince people that it definitely won't be like that when it's done..... or at least I hope it won't be like that. Steve said the tracked mast was easily proving the most popular option. He also said it will have an alloy boom with a gnav.
I also think it was a mistake to put it on show. the deck shape has to change, as does the hull. You can see the foredeck is too short and the bow too sharp and pointy but rapidly becoming too rounded. It was a good idea to put it up and gauge interest, but on the other hand, I wonder how many people had a change of heart? I will wait till next year - he thinks it will take another year before they're ready for the finished article - and have a look then. I expect it will look quite different. |

I looked at the boat at the show; standing with me were 2 well known respected sailors both who work for major builders... some guy who was scruffy dressed then talked at us like we were complete idiots for a while ... one of the guys I was with had to just walk away ... I don't know who the guy was (it wasn't Steve) but he was certainly functioning well as a sales prevention officer. |

looked like a 'Lightening' to my eyes. With that doomed deck. I explained to my son... who also said it looked a bit rough that it was a prototype. And the really big deal was how cheap it was going to be due to volume production and building techniques. He yawned and went to look at something shinny. ;) |

Well my interest was picqued, I kind of see both sides of the luff sleeve issue
and Mark (Jardine) came up with an interesting suggestion for the centreboard v daggerboard debate, it was do neither and opt for a swivel system like boards used to use, then you get the kickback swivel for tight draft situation and no slot flusher issues. The thing with the mast boltrope thing, he's trying for cost effective and if he can tap into windsurf style mast pricing which is a fraction of dinghy costs, he'd get the best of both worlds.. |

brave move bringing such an early proto to the show, fair play to them for having a go at this and driving some real cost-down thinking... if he succeeds or not, my bet is it'll start debates elsewhere about similar "production-isation" of dinghies in the 21st century and that can only be a good thing....

Well the big question I would ask myself, is there the population to justify
volume sales. Say it were £20 even, just how many 'sailors' are there? Don't think I'd bet on there being 10,000. |

Mr Cockerill talked to me about untapped markets in India and Africa as well as Europe. I understand that but you still have marketing problems where no market exists at present. Is anyone on this forum from the third world?
