It may be expensive, but in comparison to other classes I'm
sure it isn't the most, what about 470s where there is development on sails and foils, also don't 470s go soft supposedly? I'm sure the star is a pretty costly campaign too... |

I've heard that the new sails for the Carbon mast last a very short amount of time indeed! Scary if you look how much they are (for non Olympians anyway)

I don't think price matters to be honest, the olympics is the ultimate goal for the people who compete in it, so why not use the best boats? The olympics is sadly becoming less and less about the athlete and more and more about the equipment, a bit like formula 1 perhaps. But why change this? It drags the standards of all the other boats in the fleet up with it and what you end up with is a really strong following of boats. The 4000 is definitely not the boat for the job though, too easy to sail, the 49er sailors would be bored stiff sailing a 4k! If you don't agree with the olympic classes then you probably arent going to be going to the olympics, so let them get on with it and focus on winning nationals and worlds in the "cheaper" classes first. The olympic classes are all very challenging to sail for different reasons, i think there is actually a good range of boats to challenge all types of sailor, the 4000 again would not achieve this! It is simply too easy to sail and very very underpowered and very heavy! |

I just cannot understand why they will not represent mixed sex sailing. There is no difference in the abilities of men and women just, usually, their weight so why not? I suspect that the real reason is that if the girls were out with the boys they could not be making the sandwiches in the clubhouse......

That and women from a lot of countries wouldn't get the opportunity to sail at all.

The IOC has said they will not sanction new mixed doubles events. Culturally unacceptable in a lot of places.

SO WHAT!! How many women from islamic nations compete in the swimming? Beach Volleyball? Sailing (as it stands)? Mind you IOC are a bit like the UN, lots of gas no balls. Inertia by common agreement. |
