They do know why..... the settling of the beer causes a convection current of bubbles ascending in the middle and descending to the exterior due to the the beer being cooler than the glass. Try pouring Guiness into a very clod glass from the freezer after lining it with ice - the settling is regular as you expect.

Try this for useless:

A standard 'Cantor Set' is an infinite set since many of the points, including the endpoints of the removed intervals, are never removed.
