Why can a Women not helm a 49er? All you do is stand there...

OPEN CLASS MEANS OPEN TO EVERYONE (MALE AND FEMALE)!

Yes they can!!! My previous post (firmly tongue in cheek) was basically saying there is no reason why Women cannot sail the 49er (and I know several who do) as it is an Open Olympic class.

See; http://www.sailing.org/default.asp?ID=j17Fhou`w&format=p opup

Event Equipment (Class)
Windsurfer Men Neil Pryde RS:X
Windsurfer Women Neil Pryde RS:X
Multihull Open Tornado
Keelboat Women Yngling
Keelboat Men Star
Double-handed Dinghy Open 49er
Double-handed Dinghy Women 470
Double-handed Dinghy Men 470
Single-handed Dinghy Women Laser Radial
Single-handed Dinghy Open Finn
Single-handed Dinghy Men Laser

If it is an open class then it is open to men and women, can't see any women making it in the Finn but as a 49er helm it is possible.

Finding stuff on the ISAF website is not easy; somewhere there is a description of what they are looking for in the classes that fit each slot, but I can't find it now!!!

Note that the Finn used to be the mens single hander and the Laser the open, they have swapped. Looks like they may be easing the Finn out as there is no way the Laser will get the boot.
