You'll need to show your passport, though. All those yachts having to fill in customs forms will create a few jobs, too.

Reading down the list I am delighted to note that mine is registered to the Isle of Wight and therefore reinforcing the belief that we are a separate republic. Tax haven next and I look forward to welcoming you all down here for mass Farr 3.7 madness on the Western Solent.

I admire the enthusiasm but really is this going anywhere?

Ease up a bit mate ...  you don't have to sail anything that does not tickle your fancy do you - so why knock others here ?   We've heard that scratched record far too often.  If we all wanted to STILL sail Lasers etc we'd have 'better' competition would we ? ... really ? today ? RU sure ?...... But we'd also then still have to swallow hard and still sail the ruddy things now.  ('twas nice in the day' sure etc)

Yup - I still eat the occasional 'big mac' myself and that is wildy popular as well but I'm b*ggered if it was ever near the top of my "Ooh  - you know what I must have one" list.

But I guess each to their own.  Nobody has to agree here - but regular and predictable negativity is just plain boring.   Only my view of course .... Wink

As you can see from Dave Barkers boat #397 onwards there are quite a few boats being built (that takes time to do). So yes it's going somewhere.

A good class can tick along quite happily with not too many boats. The Thames Raters are still going after a hundred odd years and I don't think they're up to 30 boats built yet.Its only the mass market boats that are dead without numbers.

As to how I'd do it, market it semi complete, hull only, then differing rig options from various suppliers, offer finance, offer trade in, do a deal with a leasing company, offer affiliate schemes, do a deal for demo boat owners but they must be up for letting folk come and try them out, then give them a commission on any subsequent sales.

Well we must be doing it right then, as you can:

have a hull in any stage of completion and made from any material you like. And you can even build it yourself from plans or from lazer cut parts. You can have any mast and sail combo... the most tuned is obviously C-Tech / Norths (NZ loft) but you can have CST, Selden, Superspars mast etc.. with your chosen sails. Butler boats even offer a value package with a ally rig from Superspars and a Sail Register main.

As for the financial deals, that's a tuff call for a CA to run. I guess only a couple of uk CA's could work that. Hence why the big OD builders clean up in that area.

But for now I think we'll happily tick along, creating a nice class full of nice people, all having a really nice time sailing a great boat. You never know with the surge of boats being build in Japan, Korea, USA, Switzerland, France, Germany and Canada. We might just go and have a very nice Worlds some time not to soon? Who knows?

But sometimes the thing you are 'buying into' by buying the product is entirely separate from the product. When you buy a Ducati or a Hardly Movinson, you are buying a bike, but getting a lot of intangible benefit, even if you don't join the owners' club, there is a community out there, both on the road and on the web. With an often curious relationship with the manufacturers and retailers.
Likewise, buying a boat is buying into a racing class and often a club and a social life.
Before I bought my 400, I checked out the class and saw they offered training/coaching. The cost of that was trivial compared to even a used boat, but the value added was serious.
