MRX what a cracking looking
boat - a pity they got submerged in the tidal wave of asymmetrics.

The MRX? I'd much prefer a merlin than the MRX. It looks much much
better than its one design spin off.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Well I never did actually find out, we didn't actually ever go to a class event
in it, a shame it would have been interesting to see how we might have
fared, but whatever, it was never going to be about class racing, we've both
been there and got that particular T shirt and we certainly wouldn't want
another with 'Fatwaist' written on it.

Well there is a fast out of the box economy Fireball, it's called an RS500.

And there's a bit of a decent fleet now.

While most people love the hull designs of the traditional classes (me included), the real design feature that allows an overpowered boat to perform across the wind range is the rig.

To recreate that type of boat, with that type of hull (to allow for a broader weight range of crews) essentially any smod will need to copy the complexity of rig.  Which will cost....well about what the trad classes cost already...!

At that point, why not buy something that already has a few decades of development in it..?

Time to go full circle? Is there a market for a 'fast out of the box', off the shelf, economy Fireball or Merlin? (or any other established design that gets 60+ boats at the nationals....) The most valuable feature of a racing boat is a fleet to sail it in, that gives you enjoyable racing.

Found it thanks

Really interesting, someone obviously thinking along the same lines, not sure I'd go with a bow rudder, but the rest shows one method of
feasibility.

Xenon; they have been given a pretty good thrashing at the Endeavour and come through OK,

Maybe so, but isn't "student proof" a order of magnitude or so more challenging than "survive the endeavour"?

My suspicion is that nothing is student proof; I recall one of our Larks sinking.

I can assure you that there was plenty of contact at the Endeavour when I did it and none of the boats were damaged.
