What was the last non-Laser/Topper/RS New class that actually achieved a 50 boat nationals?

I took a look at the stats and only 12 dinghy classes had 50 or more boats at this years nationals!

The H2 had 17 boats of the 35 built in since it was launched 18 months ago show up for its Nationals and I know that as a class we aspire to get to the 50 mark given enough time. Key to this in my view will be an active association that fosters a culture of trying to help each other make the boat go fast, a bit of a different product that isn't trying to compete head on with the mass producers, a designer / owner who has outsourced the production and finishing to the best people he can find and seeks to fix issues with no fuss and the ability to stamp your personality on the boat in terms of colour and layout. Time will tell I guess!

Yep exactly, but with a proper rig and you know what it could have exactly the same dimensions sail size etc etc it would get a yardstick rating sub 1000 from the b@stards.

And maybe call it the Icon, then watch as the PYAG conspire to marginalise it like they do most new stuff that has no representative member in their little cabal.

Possibly. I haven't had the pleasure of sailing an Icon, though there is one opposite the Tasar in the dinghy park.

An educated guess says the hull shape is a lot less stable than the Tasar, being derived from modern NS14s. The advantage with the Tasar (if you're looking at things from a wide participation angle) is stability of an aircraft carrier.

FWIW - one of the most admirable qualities you (and by association) the class seems to display, is it doesn’t try and tell
folk it’s either a) something for everyone and b) doing anything particularly differently. It’s just making a boat that suits the would be RS400 or Merlin sailor (great classes) with a singlehanded, well thought out and light hearted option.

Good luck!

Well I've yet to try a Tasar, but I took an Icon round the Isle of Sheppey in a fair breeze once and whilst yes it is a bit wobbly it sort of goes so far, but is recoverable thanks to a bit of overhang, On a scale of 10, if 10 was the wobbliest boat on the planet the RS200, I'd put it at a 7.

It obviously took a while, but Supernova springs to mind.

how new is new?  if manufacturing started in this millennium then the only dinghy class would be musto skiff, if last decade then none.

That was my thoughts, the Musto Skiff is probably the only one that has achieved that, but they have Ovis and Musto in their corner.

The unfortunate truth (and I think Elvstrom is credited with saying it originally) is anybody can design a new boat and get it to market, but no matter how 'good' or 'improved' it is, it's a lot, lot harder to build a successful class around it.

The 200 isn’t wobbly, it’s got a skeg! Try an N12.
