I've heard the name in race reports (and had guessed he was "Taxi"), but don't sail the classes he does, so have never met him. Am I right in thinking he works for one of the sail or kit manufacturers? Could explain the amount of "holiday time", but not the talent, needed to win in so many different classes.
Not sure how many Nationals Uffa won - he didn't race that often, really, except to test or sell boats. The time of Avenger in 1928 appears to be unusual, and back then it was almost the only dinghy class sailed nationally.

Agreed. Likewise, the use of nicknames. I know of Andy Davis, but admit to no knowledge of 'Taxi'. As Alstorer says, I think it is poor form to use a nickname in the context of a general forum or report without first qualifying it.

It appears that my Tongue in cheek response to GRF, has been taken seriously, I was only meaning to have a little pop at Graeme....

real names should at least be used on the first instance in a report.

I completely agree, I cannot stand the constant use of nicknames, especially in reports. I do not know who 'Taxi' is, but after a quick google I see it's Andy Davis, who I have heard of. Real names are much better. |

I think one of the most irritating things
found in sports is the idle use of peoples nicknames, the assumption that
"everybody" knows is almost universally incorrect, and leads to the
impression of elitism, we don't want you because you don't happen to know
somebody. It portrays a very
poor image of a sport where being in the elite group of "I know but you
don’t" puts people off wanting anything to do with sailing. I read a report on a championships recently and gave up after a few lines, it constantly used nicknames, and the casual reader would have no idea who was doing what. The total lack of empathy is quite unbelievable. |

Seriously... No I don't 'know' him, or even 'know of' him believe it or not stuff like that doesn't even creep onto my radar, but the term National Champion and the thought that some one who racks a few of them up should somehow be lauded above and beyond, er does and I dunno I just find it irritating.
I used to find it irritating when it was applied to my own good self many many many moons past, I know the name Steve Cockeril, I actually know Geoff Carveth who must by now be half decent he's been around long enough, but sorry, no, I don't know anyone called Taxi, so I guess you groupies will have to enlighten me and anyway if he's anything like a half decent bloke I'm sure he'd be embarrassed by the 'top dog' suggestion, is my point. That and it should be Class Champion or if it has to be, then National Class Champion and if there's a crew involved then they should equally be National Class Champions with equal status. No helm however hot can reliably win without decent crew input.

Graeme, you claim to know all about sailing, but do not know Taxi!!! You are showing some big flaws in your knowledge.... Maybe Uffa Fox is a sailor more in your slightly older timeline (And I think Taxi, is getting close to Uffa, for the amount of nationals won) Jon |
